MILAN.- Nexo Edizioni announced the posthumous publication of Giuseppe Consoli Guardo's seminal work, "For Antonello and Zanetto: New Perspectives." This insightful volume combines research findings, data, and artistic analyses to explore the dynamic relationship between the esteemed 15th-century Italian painter Antonello da Messina and the innovative Lombard artist Zanetto Bugatto, offering fresh avenues for historical inquiry.

Giuseppe Consoli Guardo (1919-2010), a renowned archaeologist and art historian, meticulously examines the cultural and artistic bonds that linked Antonello da Messina—a pivotal figure in European Renaissance art—to Zanetto Bugatto. Consoli Guardo delves into Antonello’s lesser-known early years, proposing that the artist may have contributed to the fresco "The Triumph of Death" housed in Palermo's Palazzo Abatellis. This collaboration with Zanetto and the Burgundian artist Guillaume Spicre suggests a formative period of artistic exchange that significantly influenced Antonello's development.

In "For Antonello and Zanetto," Consoli Guardo reassesses the attribution of several notable 15th-century artworks, attributing many to Antonello and identifying subjects in his portraits with prominent historical figures such as Galeazzo Maria Sforza and Lorenzo de’ Medici. This reevaluation not only enhances the scientific understanding of Antonello’s oeuvre but also underscores the importance of continual scholarly inquiry and the reassessment of established narratives.

The three-year gestation of this work highlights Consoli Guardo's commitment to advancing historical and artistic research. By updating methodologies and embracing intellectual humility, he sets a precedent for future studies. "For Antonello and Zanetto: New Perspectives" not only solidifies Consoli Guardo's scholarly legacy but also opens new pathways for exploring the rich tapestry of Renaissance art.
