BRUSSELS.- The Rotor project, a pioneer in sustainable construction and material recovery, is set to unveil its latest exhibition, "Rotor. Entangled Matter," showcasing innovative approaches to ecological practices within the built environment. Launched in 2005, Rotor has evolved into two distinct entities: RotorDC, a cooperative founded in 2016 dedicated to dismantling, processing, and selling reusable construction elements and furniture, and the association Rotor, established in 2006, which functions as a study, research, advisory, and design office. Together, these structures employ 35 professionals committed to transforming material usage in architecture and construction.

At the heart of Rotor’s mission is a profound curiosity about the organization of built environment production. The project seeks to trace material trajectories and the ideas that shape them, while actively exploring sustainable practices to foster a more environmentally friendly industry. "Rotor. Entangled Matter" exemplifies this mission by presenting a series of nine original films, each approximately ten minutes long, created by acclaimed filmmakers Beka & Lemoine. These films were shot at carefully selected sites within a 200-kilometer radius of Brussels, including material recovery facilities, quarries, production sites, and former landfills. The resulting visual narratives offer a sensitive exploration of how material flows transform within economic processes, providing viewers with an intimate understanding of Rotor’s ecological vision.

The exhibition delves into critical themes that resonate deeply with Rotor’s ethos. It examines the pivotal role of material recovery practices in the contemporary economy, the often-blurred lines between demolition, deconstruction, and building maintenance, and the fluid concept of waste. Additionally, it addresses the landscape impact of economic activities, the interdependent relationship between circular and linear processes, and the potential for repurposing obsolete infrastructures. Through these themes, Rotor underscores the necessity of integrating sustainable material practices into the fabric of modern construction.

A pivotal event marking the exhibition’s launch is the inaugural conference scheduled for October 15, 2024, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts. This conference will provide an in-depth look into Rotor’s work and philosophies, followed by the official opening of the exhibition in the prestigious Horta hall. The event promises to attract architects, environmentalists, and industry leaders keen on advancing sustainable practices in construction.

"Rotor. Entangled Matter" is part of a broader series of exhibitions highlighting Belgian architecture firms that have gained international acclaim in recent years. Initiated by A+ Architecture in Belgium and Bozar, the series has previously featured notable firms such as Dierendonckblancke, Baukunst, URA Yves Malysse Kiki Verbeeck, AgwA, and NU Architectuuratelier. This collaboration underscores the vibrant and innovative spirit of Belgium’s architectural scene.

In conjunction with the exhibition, A+ Architecture in Belgium is inviting Rotor to co-publish the upcoming issue of the journal A+310 Material Flows, set to be released in December. This publication will further explore the themes presented in the exhibition, offering a comprehensive analysis of material sustainability and innovative architectural practices.

"Rotor. Entangled Matter" not only showcases Rotor’s commitment to sustainable material practices but also reinforces the importance of ecological considerations in shaping the future of architecture. Visitors to the Palais des Beaux-Arts can expect a thought-provoking and visually stunning experience that highlights the transformative potential of sustainable design.
