MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado is celebrating Spanish Neoclassicism with a compelling new exhibition featuring the drawings of José de Madrazo. Titled “Juramentos de papel” (“Oaths of Paper”), the exhibit delves into the artistic and ideological depths of one of Spain’s most influential 19th-century painters.

Drawing from the extraordinary Daza-Madrazo Collection, acquired by the Prado in 2006, the exhibition showcases nearly three hundred of Madrazo’s drawings. These works offer an exceptional glimpse into his creative process and demonstrate his remarkable versatility as an artist. Selected by Carlos G. Navarro, conservator of the 19th Century Painting Area, twelve standout pieces are on display, highlighting Madrazo’s profound connection to his mentor, Jacques-Louis David.

David, a pivotal figure in Neoclassical art, greatly influenced Madrazo’s interpretation of traditional themes. This influence is evident in Madrazo’s unique take on the iconography of oaths, a recurring motif in his work. The selected drawings range from anatomical studies, reflecting his passion for classical statuary, to preparatory compositions for grand canvases. These sketches not only reveal the meticulous craftsmanship behind his paintings but also underscore his ability to navigate and integrate complex ideological messages.

Among the featured works are poignant scenes such as “The Death of Lucretia,” “The Death of Viriatus,” and “The Destruction of Numancia.” These pieces explore themes of heroism, virtue, and resistance, set against classical backdrops that echo the turbulent political landscape of early 19th-century Spain. Madrazo’s incorporation of oath imagery serves as an artistic reflection of contemporary political anxieties, illustrating how he used his art to engage with and comment on the nation’s transformation.

Beyond their aesthetic value, Madrazo’s drawings carry significant political weight, documenting his ideological evolution and the broader societal debates of his time. The exhibition not only showcases his technical mastery but also invites visitors to reconsider his creative process through the lens of political expression. Madrazo adeptly adapted the symbolism of oaths to various narratives, crafting a modern identity for Spain through his art.

“Juramentos de papel” offers a unique opportunity to explore the intimate aspects of José de Madrazo’s artistic journey. The exhibition highlights the richness of the Prado’s collection and emphasizes the enduring legacy of Jacques-Louis David, whose influence remains pivotal as the art world approaches the bicentennial of his passing in 2025.

Visitors to the Prado can expect a thought-provoking experience that bridges classical artistry with the socio-political currents of Madrazo’s era. By examining his drawings, the museum provides a nuanced understanding of Spanish Neoclassicism and celebrates the enduring impact of one of its foremost practitioners.
