SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY.- The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College announced that the exhibition catalogue Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My has won a prestigious award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) as part of the 2023 50 Books | 50 Covers competition. This recognition highlights the exceptional design and thoughtfulness that went into creating the catalogue for the innovative survey of work by acclaimed artist Christine Sun Kim.

The AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers competition celebrates the best in book and cover design, emphasizing works that push the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship. Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My was selected from hundreds of entries worldwide, honoring the publication for its inventive approach to communicating both visually and conceptually.

Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My captures the essence of the artist’s powerful exploration of sound, language, and the politics of communication. The artist, whose first language is American Sign Language, engages with a wide range of media, including drawing, performance, and video, challenging the viewer to consider how sound and language are perceived. The exhibition catalogue features essays, short texts and reflections, an interview, and abundant large-scale images of Kim’s work. Designed by Hilary duPont of the Tang, the publication mirrors Kim’s artistic themes with a visual language that engages readers in a deeper reflection on the complexities of communication.

“We are thrilled that Hilary duPont’s brilliant design for Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My has been recognized by AIGA,” said Ian Berry, Dayton Director of the Tang Museum. “This catalogue is a testament to the power of collaboration between an artist, designer, and curators, capturing Christine Sun Kim’s innovative ideas in a visually compelling way.”

Edited by Rachel Seligman, the Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Malloy Curator at the Tang, the catalogue’s contributors include Aileen Burns, CFGNY, Daisy Desrosiers, Malik Gaines, David Horvitz, Matthew Hyland, Christine Sun Kim, Maia Ruth Lee, Johan Lundh, Thomas Mader, Mara Mills, Sara Nović, Matana Roberts, Lanka Tattersall, Niels Van Tomme, and Emily Watlington.

The Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name, which was co-organized by Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, British Columbia; Remai Modern, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio; and the Tang Museum, where the exhibition was on view from February 18, 2023 through July 16, 2023. The exhibition catalogue, co-published by the four co-organizing institutions and DelMonico Books | D.A.P.

This recognition for Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My is the fifth AIGA award for the Tang’s robust publications program. The previous AIGA winners, among nearly 90 exhibition catalogues the Tang has published since opening in 2000, are Environment and Object, 2012; Sixfold Symmetry: Pattern in Art and Science, 2018; Like Sugar, 2020; and Isaac Julien: Lessons of the Hour, 2021. These national awards underscore the Tang’s legacy of publishing high-quality, thought-provoking exhibition catalogues that resonate within the art and design communities, and beyond.
