PALM SPRINGS, CALIF.- Palm Springs Art Museum is presenting So Near, So Far, the first solo museum exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist and designer Ryan Preciado. On view at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion from October 5, 2024, to May 12, 2025, the exhibition features newly commissioned furniture, lighting, and sculpture inspired by the story of Manuel Sandoval, a little known Nicaraguan American carpenter whose life intersected with key figures in modern American architecture.

Ryan’s works draw from a deeply personal dialogue with Sandoval’s legacy, shedding light on the often- overlooked contributions of underrepresented voices in the history of design and architecture.

Sandoval, a member of the Taliesin Fellowship, played a pivotal yet largely unrecognized role in shaping modern American architecture. So Near, So Far not only highlights Ryan’s innovative approach to design but also reexamines Sandoval’s complex experiences within these collaborations, challenging the traditional narratives and archives of architectural history.

“What Ryan has created in So Near, So Far reflects so much of what is constant in his work: a deep curiosity about what goes unnoticed or unacknowledged and an ability to fold these facets of life into objects that are generous and thoughtful but also aesthetically exciting,” said Robert J. Kett, Adjunct Curator of Architecture & Design at Palm Springs Art Museum. “Our work on the exhibition reconstructs Manuel Sandoval’s life from what survives in the historical record, but Ryan has also produced a unique creative tribute to someone neglected by design history and added a new chapter to the story.”

This exhibition is curated by Robert J. Kett, PhD, Adjunct Curator of Architecture & Design at Palm Springs Art Museum and Associate Professor at ArtCenter College of Design and generously funded by Mimi & Steve Fisher, Douglas Moreland, and Kathy & Jim Simpson.

Ryan Preciado is a multifaceted artist and designer based in Los Angeles, California, known for his innovative approach that merges traditional craftsmanship with modern design aesthetics. Born and raised in Southern California, Ryan developed an early appreciation for diverse artistic expressions, which is evident in his eclectic body of work.

Ryan graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, where he honed his skills in various mediums including painting, sculpture, and digital design. His academic background laid a solid foundation for his artistic endeavors, enabling him to explore the intersections of art and technology with a critical eye.

Ryan's professional journey began in the bustling art scene of Los Angeles, where he quickly made a name for himself with his unique style that blends cultural motifs with contemporary themes. His work often addresses issues such as identity, community, and the impacts of urbanization, making him a voice for social commentary through visual arts.

As a designer, Ryan has collaborated with several prominent brands and cultural institutions, bringing his signature style to wider audiences. His projects range from large-scale murals that adorn city walls to intricate designs for apparel and digital platforms. Each piece is a testament to his belief in design as a tool for transformation and engagement.

Ryan’s exhibitions have been featured in galleries and venues across the country, and his work has been critically acclaimed for its depth and vibrant narrative. Beyond his solo projects, Ryan is dedicated to fostering a community of artists. He regularly conducts workshops and seminars, aiming to inspire the next generation of creatives with his passion and dedication to the arts.

In essence, Ryan Preciado stands out as a dynamic force in the Los Angeles art and design landscape, continuously pushing the boundaries of creativity and cultural expression.
