LONDON.- Bowman Sculpture Gallery will invite visitors to their stand at Frieze Masters 2024 on a journey through nearly two centuries of sculptural artistry. The Bowman Sculpture Gallery stand at Frieze Masters will feature works by sculptors from 1833 to the present day, encapsulating approximately 200 years of sculptural innovation and excellence.

Frieze Masters takes place from 9-13 October, 2024 in The Regent’s Park. With 130 galleries from 26 countries, Frieze Masters 2024 is led by Nathan Clements-Gillespie and sees a reimagined, artist-centred approach, including an expanded Studio section and a redefined floor plan to encourage creative connections across art history.

A highlight of the Bowman Sculpture stand will be Ossip Zadkine’s monumental bronze sculpture ‘Le Couple‘. Zadkine, a prominent Russian-born French sculptor, was a leading figure of the European avant-garde movement, celebrated for his profound ability to express movement, emotion, and the human spirit in his sculptures. ‘Le Couple‘ exemplifies his mastery of form and volume, showcasing his unique approach to Cubist deconstruction and reconfiguration of the human body. This monumental piece offers a rare opportunity to experience Zadkine’s genius in an intimate setting at Frieze Masters.

‘Le Couple’, which will stand as the centrepiece to the Bowman Sculpture booth (C18) is considered to be one of Zadkine’s most significant works, representing his distinctive style, blending elements of Cubism and Expressionism with a focus on the human form. Standing as a powerful exploration of intimacy, unity, and human emotion, this large-scale piece invites viewers to immerse themselves in the complex dynamics of relationships and the human experience. Bowman Sculpture, widely recognized as a leading gallery specializing in sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries, is honoured to present this outstanding work as part of its stand.

Bowman Sculpture’s exhibition at Frieze Masters will commence with an exquisite bronze by Jean-Jacques Feuchère, cast in 1833. This early piece sets the stage for an exploration of pivotal moments in sculpture, including works by Alfred Boucher (circa 1891-1894), Edgar Degas (conceived between 1882 and 1895), and Auguste Rodin, with his evocative “Shade” conceived in 1880. These masterpieces illustrate the rich tradition and technical prowess of 19th-century sculpture.

Transitioning to the 20th century, the gallery highlights seminal modern sculptors who redefined the medium. Visitors will encounter the dynamic forms of Henry Moore alongside Lynn Chadwick’s striking pieces from the early 1990’s. Notably, the stand features monumental works by Ossip Zadkine, conceived in 1966, showcasing the bold experimentation that characterizes modern sculpture.

Bowman Sculpture Gallery also celebrates contemporary artists, presenting works by Emily Young, Tony Cragg, and Hanneke Beaumont. These artists continue to push the boundaries of sculpture, each bringing a unique vision and innovative approach to the medium, ensuring its relevance and vibrancy in today’s art world.

This collection, spanning nearly two centuries, offers a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of sculptural art from classical techniques to contemporary innovations. Visitors to the Bowman Sculpture Gallery stand at Frieze Masters 2024 will experience a rich tapestry of artistic expression, reflecting the enduring power and versatility of sculpture.
