Guernsey's announces upcoming auction: The NYC Downtown Scene |

NEW YORK, NY.- Guernseys 2018 auction of Chelsea Hotel doors that led to the rooms of such celebrated figures as Janis Joplin, Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock is now being followed with other great Chelsea artifacts including many of the Hotels famed stained-glass windows and the actual neon lettering (beautifully restored) that - as one of the most recognizable fixtures anywhere - lit up NYCs nights and beckoned our most admired writers, musicians, artists, and actors.
Struggling to find her place in the world, a young Madonna Ciccone roamed lower Manhattan in search of gigs as a dancer until she met two handsome young musicians. She moved in, learned to play guitar and drums, and write music. She became part of the band and the rest is history! Each of the instruments she played and the original music she recorded is now being presented on behalf of those very same brothers who so helped build the career of Madonna as she became one of the most beloved figures of the last one hundred years.
When record impresario John Hammond spotted a young folk singer making the rounds of Greenwich Village's night spots, he sensed exciting things lay ahead. Hammond sensed right when he discovered none other than the great Bob Dylan. Working together, Dylans first album was created and the world was riveted by his powerful, meaningful music. The original master reel-to-reel tapes from that session were given a young man, blind since birth. Six decades later, that gentleman has given us those tapes which are being sold with proceeds going to help the blind.
The art world was in a bit of a conservative lull when, in 1981, Patti Astor - a true visionary - opened NYCs Fun Gallery. Overnight, Graffiti art exploded on the scene with the likes of Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat all showcased by Patti. With her recent passing, her family is presenting some of her beloved personal items at this unique sale.
In the days ahead, each of the auction items will be posted on bidding platforms Liveauctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. For those able to attend, the two-day preview exhibition will be taking place live at the Chelsea Hotel where many of these treasures originated. Specific questions, please call us. Have something youd like to include in the auction, something that relates to the vibrant culture of lower Manhattan over the last number of decades?
