SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace, recognized for the last 30 years for exhibiting avant-garde artwork by Texas, national, and international artists in San Antonio, announced a generous grant of $250,000 from the 80|20 Foundation in support of its Rooftop Renovation project. This grant will enable Artpace to transform its space into a vibrant, eco-friendly, and dynamic public cultural hub.
Also supporting the project are local patrons, the Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation, the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, The Brown Foundation, Inc., the City of San Antonio, and Bexar County.
Grant funds are committed to Artpace's rooftop upgrade, slated for completion later this year. Conceptualized by Lake Flato Architects, who renovated the once Goodyear Tire store to the current artist residency and exhibition space in the mid-1990s, the renovation will come to fruition with the help of Grasso Gay Architects and Big Sun Solar.
The project's highlight includes a shade structure equipped with solar panels to harness renewable energy. This sustainability feature aligns with Artpace's commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation within the art community.
In addition to the solar-powered shade structure, the rooftop renovation will include a dedicated food and drink service bar, providing visitors with an enhanced experience during events. The design will also incorporate A new restroom facility for patrons' convenience. An expansion of the rooftop deck is a key element of the project, enabling Artpace to host a broad spectrum of events and accommodate larger audiences.
"The redesigned rooftop space will be instrumental in broadening Artpace's cultural programming, allowing an expanded schedule of events. The public can anticipate an exciting array of activities year-round, including film series, performance art, live music performances, and much more. This renewed commitment to diverse programming aligns with Artpace's vision of fostering creativity, collaboration, and community engagement" Caroline Staudt, Chair, Artpace Board of Directors
"As we look forward to the opening of the renovated rooftop, we want to emphasize our commitment not only to Artpace but also to the future development of the downtown San Antonio community. Artpace's presence as a catalyst for artistic expression and engagement with our local community is invaluable to our neighborhood. We see Artpace as a trusted collaborator in the ongoing revitalization and growth of our downtown area." Alexandra Frey, Executive Director, 80|20 Foundation
"We are deeply grateful to the 80|20 Foundation for their support of Artpace's mission and vision for downtown," expressed Riley Robinson, Director of Artpace. "This transformative grant will enable us to reimagine our rooftop space, making it a sustainable, welcoming, and dynamic destination for artists and the community."
