"Fading Echo," a compelling solo exhibition by Fengzee Yang, is on view at Slow Dance Gallery from November 4 to December 17, 2023. Curated by Elizabeth Lalley, this exhibition marks Yang's debut solo showcase, offering an in-depth exploration of her unique artistic vision and nuanced investigation into human experience through materiality.

Fengzee Yang is a renowned interdisciplinary artist who works with meaningful materials such as clay, wood, and metal. Seeing the world as mystical and opaque, Yang tackles the unknown through object-making. She intuitively utilizes organic and inorganic forms, moments, and engagements to indicate narratives around representation and self-definition. Her sculptures are mediators between spirituality and reality, examining themes of longing, loss, and nostalgia. She received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her works have been shown in Comfort Station Chicago, 1922 Gallery SAIC, and the Plan Gallery. She was the artist in residency at Taoxichuan International Art Studio and Oxbow School of Art.

Fengzee Yang, who works primarily in clay and incorporates elements of wood and metal, characterizes her sculptures as embodying “precise moments of longing.” Her pieces, while familiar in their forms, carry an enigmatic quality that evokes both living creatures and geological formations. This interplay between organic and inorganic, real and imagined, creates a layered and complex experience for viewers. Yang's work intentionally blurs these distinctions, making the imagery mutable and flexible. “Through my work, I explore the voids within human experience, creating metaphors of emptiness and absence,” Yang explains.

The thematic focus of "Fading Echo" revolves around the fluidity of time and memory. Yang’s pieces are not confined to linear narratives but present a continuum of experiences and emotions. “Time undergoes a metamorphosis in my sculptures,” Yang notes, “becoming a fluid, ever-shifting continuum that connects the intricate narratives within my work.”

The exhibition also provides Yang an opportunity to observe how her art interacts with both space and audience. “This is my first solo exhibition, and I am curious to see how my work engages with the audience in this dynamic setting,” she reflects. Yang’s approach fosters personal connections through her art, particularly within the context of her solo presentation.

Yang’s practice blends materials and forms intuitively, resulting in vibrant, dynamic compositions. Her choice of color and form is guided by her emotional state and the surrounding energy, creating artworks that resonate with both personal and universal aspects of the human experience.

Looking ahead, Yang is eager to explore new themes and techniques. Her ongoing work, including the “Fading Echo” series, continues to push the boundaries of her artistic practice. Yang’s evolving body of work reflects her commitment to innovation and her exploration of profound aspects of existence.

"Fading Echo" at Slow Dance offers an introspective journey into the nature of absence, presence, and their intersections. Visitors will experience a thought-provoking exploration of the boundaries between reality and imagination, resonating with the universal human quest for understanding and connection.
