CORAL GABLES, FL .- The Lowe Art Museum is presenting A Collector's Journey: Susan Grant Lewin and the Art Jewelry World. This exhibition, which has been brought to fruition by consulting curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman, features the extraordinary collection of one of the worlds preeminent collectors. It is on view at the Lowe through September 14, 2024.
Author of One of a Kind: American Art Jewelry Today, Susan Grant Lewin has been a keen observer of the field for decades. Lewin notes: "It is hard to believe that 30 years have passed since I wrote One of a Kind: American Art Jewelry Today. It has been an incredible ride. Along the way, I have learned so much about the field and developed lasting friendships with many talented jewelers. The field has grown substantially and is now thriving internationally, allowing me to encounter amazing artists and craftspeople wherever I go." Her passion for and profound knowledge of the art jewelry field is directly tied to Lewins illustrious career as an architecture and design editor and, later, founder and director of Susan Grant Lewin Associates, a NYC-based public relations firm whose clientele includes leading architects, artists, and designers.
A Collector's Journey is a testament to Lewin's enduring dedication to art jewelry and provides a unique lens through which to view the evolution of the field, which today is a thriving global movement. The Lowes Beaux Arts Director and Chief Curator Dr. Jill Deupi notes: This exhibition provides us with an extraordinary opportunity not only to celebrate the remarkable Susan Grant Lewin and the many artists whom she has supported, but also to share with our campus and our community an art form that may be unfamiliar to many: art jewelry. Sculptures on a miniature scale, the outstanding works we will be featuring provide a wonderful overview of the field over the course of the past seventy years. I am extremely grateful to Susan for her generosity, in every sense of the word, to Consulting Curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman for her expertise and dedication to excellence, and Davira S. Taragin, who initiated the project.
This exhibition highlights Susan Grant Lewin's pivotal role in fostering the growth of art jewelry and showcases her journey as a collector. Presenting nearly ninety unique works featuring innovative ideas, non-traditional materials and masterful techniques, A Collectors Journey includes pieces by noted artists from around the world, including Gijs Bakker, Jamie Bennett, Helen Britton, Arline Fisch, Thomas Gentille, Daniel Jocz, Jiro Kamata, Daniel Kruger, Wendy Ramshaw, Bernhard Schobinger, Joyce J. Scott, Kiff Slemmons, and Annamaria Zanella. The show is accompanied by a full-color illustrated catalogue with essays contributed by Ursula Ilse- Neuman (Curator Emerita, Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and John Stuart Gordon (Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Curator of American Decorative Arts, Yale University Art Gallery), together with a Q&A between Lewin and Deupi.
The outstanding works in this exhibition and accompanying publication are a testament to Susans ability to combine two of her greatest pleasures, art jewelry and travel. She is a discoverer par excellence on a lifelong quest to acquire new works and share them with the public, says consulting curator, Ursula Ilse-Neuman.
