BERLIN, GERMANY.- The Berlinische Galerie - State Museum of Modern Art, Photography, and Architecture, presents Johanes Geccelli - Color Light and Shadow. On display are the newest tableaux of the 80-year-old painter, who moved in 1994 into an ample studio in Jühnsdorf near Berlin. Since then he is in a very intensive creative phase, which results in many large-sized paintings. Apart from the pictures that belong to the Berlinische Galerie, works from the painters studio as well as works form private collections, which were never shown to the public before, are to be seen.
Geccelli works with a kind of module: a constant row of right-angled bars with continuous changing colors. A figure in the center of the painting, that initially could be surmised, disappears completely. The content of the picture is nothing but color. The color gradient from green to blue, from blue to black, or from yellow to white and vice versa, from red to blue or from yellow to gray creates pictures that look homogeneous. They create a certain atmosphere that strikes the observers spirit and emotion. The dark works in particular are mere meditation pictures.
At his 70th birthday the artist painted his first tilted picture in which the bars are angled in a way that the canvas on the verges of the rectangular tableaux is still visible. Hereby the artist is crossing borders and adds new dimensions to his work. Pictures of this series are shown as well. With this exhibition the Berlinische Galerie honors an important and unique artist, who also, as a professor, had a wide influence over Berlins art and artists for a long time.
