LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.- The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery presents American Art, 19th Century to Present, on view through July 01, 2007. Sheldon's celebrated collection of American art offers a chronological survey from the early-19th century through the first years of the 21st century.
The installation is a key part of Sheldon's "Forming American Identities" initiative, which examines how artists express their identities and share formative influences -- cultures, gender, places and experiences -- within their works. Through programs and events, Sheldon and its partnering entities are using this exhibition and others to explore how individual artists have emerged from America's vast tapestry of influences and generational tides with distinctive identities, and how they have used their artwork to form new cultural realities through the nation's history. The Hixson-Lied Endowment is a generous sponsor for the "Forming American Identities" initiative.
