NEW YORK, NY.- The Garment District Alliance announced the latest in its ongoing series of public art exhibits, showcasing Sky on Water, a series of paintings that explore the interplay of light and structure within shallow water systems by New Jersey-based artist Léni Paquet-Morante.
The installation is part of the Garment District Space for Public Art program, which showcases artists in unusual locations and has produced more than 200 installations, exhibits, and performances over the past 18 years. Located inside the Kaufman Arcade building on 139 W 35th Street, in the heart of the Garment District, the free exhibit is accessible to the public through May 17, 2024.
Were proud to present Sky on Water to the public as part of the Garment District Space for Public Art program, said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance. Filled with rich, earthy tones, Lénis works are the perfect addition to our neighborhood as we welcome spring in New York City. We encourage all to stop by and take in this captivating installation on their next visit to the Garment District!
Drawing inspiration from the nuanced dynamics found in shallow water ecosystems, Sky on Water reflects Paquet-Morantes personal perspectives through shifting, broken, and merging images. Utilizing an intuitive approach to painting, Paquet-Morante skillfully translates these intricate systems into tangible works of art.
Paquet-Morante was born in Canada, raised in Maryland, and has lived in New Jersey since 1984. Her interpretations of landscape through painting, drawing, sculpture, and monoprint projects have been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the northeast region, including the 2022 and 2023 New Jersey Arts Annual. A full-time artist working in a studio at the Johnson Atelier Studio Program in Hamilton and through residencies, Paquet-Morante was recently awarded a 2024 New Jersey State Council on the Arts grant, is a signature member of the National Association of Women Artists and is listed in the Women Artists of America National Directory. Her work is held in private, corporate, and institutional collections internationally.
The Garment District is home to diverse business sectors from technology to hospitality and includes thousands of people working in the creative economy, including fine and performing artists, designers, architects, photographers, and more than a hundred theaters, galleries, performance spaces, and studios.
