LONDON.- Important and personal works by Keith Vaughan that were held in the collection of Peter Adam (1929-2019), the man who played a crucial role in preserving and promoting the artists legacy, will be auctioned in London on March 26. The Modern British and Irish Art sale at Chiswick Auctions includes 27 lots from Adams estate. Part One of the unique collection was sold by Chiswick in July 2023.
Peter Adam, who grew up in 1930s Berlin, is best known as a filmmaker, BBC producer and editor of the art magazines Review and Arena. However, he also championed a number of British and Irish artists and designers.
A close friend to Keith Vaughan, Adam curated multiple exhibitions of Vaughan's work after the artists death by suicide in 1977. The second tranche of the Adam collection includes oils, studies, drawings, collages and three-dimensional works by Vaughan from across his career. All were acquired directly from Vaughan by his dear friend and supporter.
The collection features several sketchbooks including one with a drawing titled Summer Landscape, Codford, 1942, estimate £5,000-£7,000 ($6,369-$8,915); and another from 1951 featuring seven pencil drawings over eight pages. Estimate: £4,000-£6,000 ($5,095-$7,640).
Estimates for a group of a dozen charcoal and pencil sketches range from £400-£600 ($510-$765) to £1,500-£2,000 ($1,910). They include the drawing 'Study for Linear Group (1963) that features the dedication For Clauss Peter from Keith with Love Jan 1, 65. An early self-portrait worked in pen, ink, wash and gouache signed and dated March 17, 1950, is guided at £12,000-£18,000 ($15,280-$22,920).
A 1955 gouache and India ink composition titled Two Seated Figures is one of two works that were included in the exhibition Keith Vaughan held at Londons Olympia exhibition center in 2002. The other is Foreshore with Three Figures (1963), a prime oil-on-board work measuring 16in x 17in that was purchased by Adam from Vaughan during their long friendship. They are expected to sell for £8,000-£12,000 ($10,190-$15,280) and £30,000-£50,000 ($38,200-$63,670), respectively.
