MEMPHIS, TENN.- Dixon Gallery and Gardens presents winter exhibitions featuring works by San Francisco Bay Area artists Paul Wonner and Theophilius Brown, along with pieces by artists Remy Miller and Joe Morzuch. The winter series also includes an exhibition featuring 16th-century valentines. Finally, Dixon’s Teen Counsel curated an interactive exhibition featuring 19 local teenagers.

Inspired by the widespread pursuit of abstract expressionism in the late 1940s and early 1950s, artists Wonner and Brown began to reengage with the visible world, applying the gestural style of action painting to depictions of people, landscapes, and still lifes. Both artists' styles evolved moving toward more representational works, as seen in “Breaking the Rules” on view in the Dixon’s main galleries Jan. 28-March 31.

Former Memphis College of Art professors Miller and Morzuch’s "Marking Time," a joint exhibition showcasing their close friendship and shared dedication to painting, runs through March 31 in the Mallory/Wurtzberger Galleries. The dual show examines Miller's bold, impressively scaled gouache landscapes and Morzuch's sensitive oil-on-canvas still lifes and self-portraits. Both artists, who taught at the local institution from 2013 to 2018, focus on the everyday, finding beauty and meaning in unpretentious objects. Meet the artists during a reception on Thursday, Feb. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; free and open to the public.

An exhibition curated by the Dixon’s Teen Counsel features 30 works of art made by 19 local teenagers. Centering on the intricate world of interpersonal feelings and concepts through the young artists’ diverse expressions, “Who Is That Teen Artist? How Does Art Make You Feel?” is on view Jan. 28-March 31 in the Interactive Gallery. Meet the artists on Feb. 15 during a special reception, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Mementos from lovers in the 16th century are highlighted in a section of the main galleries in “To Have and To Hold: Valentines from the Victorian Era”. The collection of charming valentines ranging from the romantic to the child-like is on view Jan. 28-March 31.
