NEW YORK, NY.- Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, one of the country’s foremost educational experiences for artists, has appointed Steve Locke to the Board of Governors. Locke participated in the program in 2002, served as a program Dean from 2004 through 2009, and assumed the role of Resident Faculty Artist in 2023.

The Board of Governors oversees the artistic program, including participant and faculty selection. They collaborate with the Board of Trustees to ensure the organization fulfills its mission and remains a powerful voice in the art community. Locke, expressing gratitude, stated, "Skowhegan has been such a major part of my life as an artist and educator. I'm really happy to have this opportunity to serve and give back to a place that has given so much to me.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board of Governors, Co-Chair Alix Pearlstein stated, "We send a hearty welcome to Steve Locke! His dedication to Skowhegan, and his love for the community shined through in his experience as a participant, Dean and Resident Faculty Artist. He is such an accomplished artist and we are honored to work with him in this newest capacity!"

Steve Locke (b.1963; Cleveland, OH) was raised in Detroit and lives and works in the Hudson Valley, NY. Locke’s practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. Through his critical engagement with the legacy of the Western canon, Locke interrogates the connections between desire, identity, and violence, ultimately pushing viewers to confront and critically engage with a complicated present and painful past. Locke’s work has been included in many exhibitions and has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including the daily practice of painting, Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA (2022) and there is no one left to blame, curated by Helen Molesworth, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2013), traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, MI (2014). His works are represented in the collections of Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, Asheville, NC; Brooklyn Academy of Music, NY; Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Winter Park, FL; Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, MA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., among others. Locke is the recipient of many grants and awards, including the Rappaport Prize from the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (2022) and the Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2020).
