German Design Award 2024: German Design Council announces winners
With the German Design Award, the German Design Council honours significant design trends as well as pioneering and innovative design achievements that holistically cover all areas of everyday life and the diversity of design culture.

FRANKFURT .- The internationally renowned jury has chosen: A total of 65 "Gold" awards were presented in the "Excellent Product Design", "Excellent Communications Design" and "Excellent Architecture" disciplines at the German Design Award 2024. All winners will be honoured at the Award Show on 26 January 2024 in Frankfurt am Main. The winner of the "German Design Award Newcomer" award will also be announced at this event. With the German Design Award, the German Design Council honours significant design trends as well as pioneering and innovative design achievements that holistically cover all areas of everyday life and the diversity of design culture.

Innovative products, sustainable solutions and state-of-the-art design – the German Design Award goes to companies whose pioneering products and projects impress in the three award disciplines of "Excellent Product Design", "Excellent Communications Design" and "Excellent Architecture". This year, awards were presented to 55 nations in 68 categories; in addition to "Winner" and "Special Mention", the highest honour "Gold" was awarded a total of 65 times across all disciplines. The focus is increasingly on transformation themes: How can products be made more environmentally friendly, user experiences optimised, processes made more efficient and our living environment made fairer?

"With the German Design Award, we are creating far more than just a showcase for design achievements. We are increasingly recognising the need to put the design discourse at the forefront: Global developments, sustainability and circular design, digitalisation and AI, as well as ideas for a more social, fairer society are topics that have a place with us," emphasises Lutz Dietzold, CEO of the German Design Council. "With submissions from every continent, the German Design Award showcases cross-industry developments and concrete solutions on how we can achieve global change."

Among the awards in the "Excellent Communications Design" discipline, the "Brand Identity", "Corporate Identity" and "Event" categories are particularly well represented this year. In "Excellent Product Design", the categories "Medical/Health Care" and "Sports/Outdoor Activities" received outstanding submissions. In addition, the categories that revolve around the design of the home – from "Outdoor Living" to "Furniture" and "Kitchen" via "Bath & Wellness" – stand out. This trend continues in the "Excellent Architecture" discipline: Alongside architectural projects, it is the "Interior Architecture" category that has produced the most awards.

Award Show

The presentation of the award-winning projects will take place as part of the German Design Award Show. On 26 January 2024, the winners of the disciplines "Excellent Product Design", "Excellent Communications Design" and "Excellent Architecture" will come together at Kap Europa, Messe Frankfurt's congress centre, for a unique networking event for the design community from business, design, industry and culture. In addition to an exhibition of the award-winning projects, panel discussions are planned under the theme "From Design to Success", which will promote the exchange and discourse on current design topics and focus on the value of design in solving global transformation challenges. All 65 "Gold" award winners will be formally honoured on stage at the Award Show and receive their gold sculpture. The special "German Design Award Newcomer" prize will also be announced on this occasion and presented on stage.

Newcomer Award

Since 2012, the German Design Council Foundation has been promoting German design talent with the "German Design Award Newcomer" in a separate category. The following five finalists have a chance of winning the award in 2024 Leonie Burkhardt (textile design), Justus Hilfenhaus (product design), Nicolas König (architecture), studio formagora (product design/participative design) and Sebastian Winter (communication design/digital design). Which of them will receive the Newcomer Award will also be announced at the award show on 26 January 2024.
