NEW YORK, NY.- Roland Auctions NY presented its first auction of the Winter season on Saturday December 16th with Contemporary Art getting much of the attention throughout the day, with an After Alexander Calder Tapestry taking the top spot as high seller of the auction. The sale featured items from multiple estates and included over 150 lots of Art & Memorabilia from a prominent New York art world insider’s private collection.
The After Alexander Calder Tapestry, a woven jute tapestry/rug depicting intertwining serpents / snakes, circa 1975, bearing label, handmade in Guatemala - possibly C.A.C. Publications, with hanging loops verso, came from an Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY residence. [85 x 56 approx.] and sold high for $21,250. When Calder first moved to Paris in 1926, he began creating his Cirque Calder and continued to explore his invention of wire sculpture, whereby he "drew" with wire in three dimensions (from the Calder Foundation).
Other prominent pieces were a Gregory Gillespie (American, 1936-2000): "Saint & Dog" - M/M on Paper, with artist label to verso, titled "Saint and Dog" and dated "1983," with labels for Salander-O'Reilly and Forum Galleries. [Artwork: 24 1/4" H x 20 1/2" W; Frame: 25 3/8" H x 21 5/8" W], selling for $5,000 and a Mark Kostabi (American, b. 1960): “Moving On” Acrylic, Signed "Kostabi 2002”, World Trade Center “Moving On”, unframed acrylic on canvas depicting a couple in a subway car, two dinosaurs, and a green apple, [18" H x 24" W], selling for $2125, while a Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989): "Changes in Great Masterpieces" – 5, Five color limited edition "Changes in Great Masterpieces" series, pencil signed and numbered (non sequential) out of 350 editions. Includes: Rembrandt 343/350, Vermeer 46/350, Velasquez 339/350, Velasquez 227/350, Raphael 247/350. Sheets approx. 33 x 25 in various large format sizes. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC, sold for $ 2375.
Jewelry and silver came next, with a 20th century modernist scarf necklace by Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. [38 L inches]. Weight: 117.4 dwt, 182.6 grams. Missing name tag. We guarantee this is Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co., going for $12,500, an 18K Gold Twist Cord Bracelet, Robust design bracelet, having thick 18K yellow gold cord interlaced with 18K white gold cables. 30.1 dwt. [9" L], which sold for $2250 and a Tiffany & Co. Makers Silver Repousse Bowl, Tiffany & Co. Makers sterling silver oval footed bowl having floral repousse rim and four claw feet, American, 20th century. 56.05 ozt. [4 1/2" H x 12 1/2" W x 16" D], selling for $2500.
In other areas, also selling high, was a featured Herend "Yellow Dynasty" Porcelain Dinner Set 130pcs, Herend Hungarian porcelain dinner service in the "Yellow Dynasty" pattern, with hand-painted scrolling foliate motifs on an Imperial-yellow ground around Chinese bamboo and floral details, reminiscent of famille jaune antique ceramics. Marked to bases. Late 1980s. Comprises: 16 dinner plates (10" diam) 14 dessert plates (7 7/8" diam) 15 salad plates (7 1/4" diam) 12 bread and butter plates (6 1/8" diam) 14 crescent bone/vegetable plates (7 5/8" wide) 15 teacups (4 7/8" diam) 16 tea saucers (7 1/8" diam) 12 demitasse coffee cups (2 1/2 H, 3" diam) 15 demitasse saucers (4 3/8" diam) 1 handled square dessert tray (11 1/8" x 9 1/2") 1 covered sugar bowl (4 1/4 H x 4" diam) 1 cream pitcher (3 7/8" H x 5 1/2" diam, which sold for $11,250 and an Art Deco Austrian Ceramic Bowl, Art Deco Austrian glazed earthenware jardiniere, circa 1927, designed by Erna Koprna (1894-1984), model 274, bearing marks to bases. Art world memorabilia from that private collection of a New York art world insider, included a Collection of Artist Autographs & Postcards, Collection of approximately 35 framed postcards, artists' signatures, and artworks, together with two sets of Roy Lichtenstein postcards. Some notable signatures include: Robert Indiana, Kenny Scharf, Christo, Mark Kostabi, Red Grooms, Dominick Di Meo, Betty Woodman, Jasper Johns, Peter Max, Chuck Close, David Hockney, and more. Mostly all in plexiglas frames. [Various sizes, largest frame: 11 1/2" H x 8 1/2" W, going for $7500 and a group of business cards, each one signed by a different artist, including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, James Rosenquist, and Alex Katz, matted and framed under glass. [Frame: 12 1/4" H x 6 1/4" W], which sold for $3437.
Two Steinway & Sons pianos did well, with a Black Piano Model "M", with bench, 1928, Model "M". [67" W], selling for $5312 and a Model S Grand Piano, serial number 325888. Mahogany case, tapered legs. with bench, sold for $ 4062.
In weaponry, a 17th Century Japanese Katana Samurai Sword, signed on tang "Uji Nobu." Cutting edge 28 inches, fine temper, flames, waves, couple of nail catches. Early iron tsuba, pair of dragon manuki on handle. [Overall length: 39 1/4 inches], sold for $2125.
