TOULON.- As part of the 2023 Emerige Revelations exhibition presented in Toulon, the jury, gathered by the villa Noailles, awarded the villa Noailles Prize for the 2023 Emerige Revelations to Morgane Ely as well as a special mention to Jules Bourbon.
Morgane Ely will benefit from a residency within the territory of the Métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée and more particularly at the villa Noailles. The fruit of this residency will be presented in a solo show by the artist at the Ancien Évêché de Toulon in December 2024, produced by the villa Noailles together with its local partners.
Morgane Ely will take part in the competition as a jury member. Jules Bourbon is awarded by a residency in Marseille with the support of the villa Noailles and all the members of the jury.
THE VILLA NOAILLES PRIZE OF THE EMERIGE REVELATIONS
The Métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée and the villa Noailles art center are hosting the exhibition of the Emerige Revelations Grant in Toulon. Similar to previous editions, the artist selected for the 2023 edition, chosen by the jury assembled by villa Noailles, will, in 2024, benefit from a residency at the art center, further affirming its commitment to young artists by showcasing their creations and providing long term support.
This project is part of the cultural dynamic that includes, just a short distance away, the Toulon Art Museum, the Camondo Mediterranean School, the Toulon Provence Mediterranean School of Art and Design, and the Châteauvallon-Liberté National Stage.
Each year, the design collections of major national institutions during the summer, the Emerige Revelations Grant in the fall, and an exhibition of designers drawings in the spring, create a multidisciplinary cultural offering in the heart of Toulon.
The love of art
«The villa Noailles art center and the Emerige Revelations Grant share the same values: supporting, promoting, and guiding young creators. This year, 12 artists are competing for the Villa Noailles Emerige Revelations Prize. For the fourth consecutive year, this prize allows an artist to benefit from a 3-month residency at Villa Noailles to produce an exhibition presented at the Ancien Évêché de Toulon, thus facilitating the real integration of Emerige Revelations into the Métropole Toulon Provence Mediterranée, in collaboration with local partners,» ---says Jean-Pierre Blanc.
MORGANE ELY
Morgane Ely was introduced to Japanese printmaking and wood engraving during a stay in Tokyo. Engraving is the lifeblood of her work, giving it a photo-realistic aspect in which traditional heritage comes face to face with contemporary female representations filtered through Fast-Culture and Instagram.
Immersed between the 1990s and 2020, from the Kardashian sisters in white bikinis to Suki, the sexy protagonist of Fast & Furious, Morgane Elys work questions the embodiment of todays powerful women through her choice of images.
Deliberately playing with visibility and legibility, the need to take the time to get close becomes self-evident. It is a striking freeze-frame imbued with a sense of sisterhood. ---Pauline Webber
JULES BOURBON
SPECIAL MENTION OF THE JURY
Jules Bourbon writes and films the repetition and accumulation of everyday life. Using poetry, he captures the singularity he perceives in the trivial through videos that he conceives as points of perception of a reality that is at once violent, touching, dirty and splendid. Writing becomes a kind of subjective camera. Jules approaches language orally and through video, a medium he sees as a particular way of grasping text. The videos are conceived as moments, as isolated events that do not directly resonate with each other. By dint of watching or questioning, images accumulate, and words are spat out one after the other...
