NEW YORK, NY.- Edwynn Houk Gallery has begun the presentation of Abelardo Morell's most recent bodies of tent-camera works, New Ground: In the Terrain of Van Gogh and Monet (2022-23), which opened on Thursday, October 19th. A reception with the artist will be held today from 2-4pm.

Morell's signature tent-camera technique, which has evolved from his experiments with classic camera obscura optics, reinvigorates ancient discoveries with a contemporary vision. Using the earliest ancestor of modern photography, the artist has developed a way to project chosen views onto the earth beneath his feet. The resulting works reflect highly intentional marriages of the landscape with the materiality of the ground.

Morell's experimental approach not only engages with photography's ancient history but also with modern painting. Inspired by the plein air practices of van Gogh and Monet, Morell made works in the same locations in France where these artists painted, not recreating their works but rather generating a radically modern vocabulary informed by art history.

Edwynn Houk Gallery specializes in photography. Since its inception in 1977, the gallery has represented the leading figures of the Modernist movement. With a focus in particular on vintage photographs from 1917-1939, the gallery presents early works by artists such as André Kertész, László Moholy-Nagy, El Lizzitsky, Dorothea Lange, Man Ray, Tina Modotti, Brassaï, Robert Frank, Margaret Bourke-White, and Dora Maar. Beginning with exclusive representation of Sally Mann in 1989, the gallery has expanded to serve a select group of leading contemporary photographers, including Stephen Shore, Annie Liebovitz, Robert Polidori, Valérie Belin, Abelardo Morell, Matthew Pillsbury, Lynn Davis, Lalla Essaydi, Danny Lyon, and Joel Meyerowitz. Only a small selection of available works is presented on our website, so please do not hesitate to reach out to our team with any questions.

Edwynn Houk Gallery has participated in Art Basel for more than three decades. In addition, the gallery regularly exhibits at the Armory Show (New York), Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami Beach, and other international art fairs. Mr. Houk has served on the Board of Directors for the ADAA (Art Dealers Association of America), Paris Photo, and AIPAD and the Selection Committees for Art Basel and Paris Photo.
