Rory Macbeth Attempts to Paint "Utopia" |

Artist Rory Macbeth attempts to paint Sir Thomas More's book, Utopia.
|
NORWICH, UK.-Artist Rory Macbeth is attempting to paint the entire text of Sir Thomas More's book, Utopia, on the outside of the former Eastern Electricity building on Duke Street, Norwich. Rory has calculated the site into sections so that the text will read continuously around the whole of the building! The paint is traditional lime whitewash, which will deteriorate over time and completely disappear. The building will eventually be demolished next year.
'Utopia' has 100 pages and Rory estimates that he will need to write one line every 90 seconds, during the hours of daylight, if he is to finish in time for the opening of the EASTinternational 2006 contemporary art exhibition, on Saturday 8 July. He has been painting since Monday this week.
The building, sited in a car park on Duke Street, has been kindly leant for Rory's project by Targetfollow property development. Access via Westwick Street and Duke Street.
Rory Macbeth is one of 25 artists selected by Turner Prize winning artist 2004, Jeremy Deller, and Belgian curator Dirk Snauwaert for this year’s EASTinternational contemporary art exhibition. Other artists include Matt Stokes, Becks Futures winner 2006.
