LONDON.- To coincide with the 20/21 auction season in London this October, Christie’s is collaborating with Lakwena Maciver to present the first artist’s takeover of the historic headquarters in St James’s. Lakwena Maciver has responded to ‘This Is London. Everchanging. Forever Captivating.’ to create an immersive viewer experience both internally and externally. The installation was unveiled to the public yesterday, 6 October, as the pre-sale exhibitions go on view and will remain on display until 15 October. As part of the partnership, an exclusive tote bag designed by Lakwena Maciver will be available at Christie’s King Street in limited drops that will take place throughout the week of 9 October with further details on obtaining one to be announced on Christie’s social media channels.

Lakwena Maciver: “London, a city that is constantly evolving and inspiring new ideas in its unique cultural landscape, informed the concept of TENDER, LOVING, CARE, as Christie’s celebrates This is London. Combining vibrant colours and clashing patterns to reflect on the role the city plays in bringing people together from all walks of life, I also want to speak to the human desire to make connections through the exchange of art, ideas, values and culture when they step inside Christie’s. The installation will embody the rhythmic pace and ever-changing texture of this city.”

Tessa Lord, Acting Interim Head of Department, Post-War and Contemporary Art: “As we celebrate This Is London in recognition of 20 years of Frieze art Fair, we are deeply honoured to work collaboratively with Lakwena Maciver to present visitors to Christie’s with an immersive visual experience. King Street has been the home of Christie’s auction house for 200 years, and we are thrilled to be able to transform the building in collaboration with Lakwena Maciver – reflecting the everchanging face of the London art world.”

Anthea Peers, President EMEA, Christie’s: “Lakwena Maciver has reimagined the façade and reception area of Christie’s so visitors to our global headquarters will enter our building via her immersive artwork. Celebrating what makes London such a unique cultural capital, we’re delighted to reflect the vibrancy of our city.”

This is London. Everchanging. Forever Captivating.

This October, Christie’s celebrates ‘This is London’, reflecting the unique energy of the British capital, aligning with the 20th anniversary of Frieze London. London is, and always has been, a city of change, evolution, inclusion, dynamism, tradition and modernity. Christie’s will explore the infinite ways artists draw inspiration from the everchanging, yet forever captivating London, and at the heart of this will be our 20/21 sale series.

London’s position as “a dynamic, creative capital” is being celebrated in a campaign to boost the UK’s arts industries. The campaign, launched to coincide with the 20th anniversary of contemporary art fair Frieze London, brings together leading figures from the city’s creative industries with the backing of the Evening Standard and the Mayor of London.
