Heritage Auctions' October 5 Luxury Accessories Signature® Auction feels like shopping the world's most fashionable closet. From the rich brown monogram canvas of Louis Vuitton and the signature silhouettes of Hermès to chic creations by Goyard and Chanel, the auction's 625 lots include some of the rarest and most coveted handbags, jewelry, accessories and travel pieces on the planet.
Leading the auction is the ultimate Hermès design: a 32cm Matte White Himalayan Niloticus Crocodile Retourne Kelly. Even rarer than a Himalayan Birkin, this bag is a masterwork of incomparable craftsmanship and artistry, made from one of the scarcest materials on earth, the hide of the Nile crocodile, which has been painstakingly hand-dyed to transform the smoky gray skin into a luminous white ombre reminiscent of the snow-capped Himalayas.
"Himas are the most spectacular bag and the rarest ever created, and Kelly Himas are even harder to find than Birkins," says Diane D'Amato, Heritage's Director of Luxury Accessories, Private Sales & The Boutique. "But we are thrilled to offer an extraordinary selection of other sought-after Hermès creations, too, including special orders, exotics, vintage pieces, and Birkins and Kellys in every size."
When it comes to handbags, D'Amato notes that some of the best things come in small packages as mini bags continue to trend. Lucky for collectors, Heritage's October 5 auction has a fantastic assortment of the hardest-to-find Mini Kellys, including a rare vintage 20cm Black Varanus Niloticus Lizard Sellier and a vintage 20cm Owl Print Silk and Rouge Vif Box Calf Leather Sellier.
Other Hermès offerings include jewelry, luggage, watches, blankets, silk scarves, vintage porcelain ashtrays and even a bike. Inspired by the Japanese compact bicycle, Hermès' lightweight Black Odyssee Terre Compact Carrier Bike is made of ash, aluminum and Black Idro calfskin and features four speeds and a sleek wood frame replete with light-integrated handlebars. "It's definitely one of the chicest ways to get around!" D'Amato says.
In addition to Hermès, the auction offers a plethora of gorgeous pieces by Chanel, another global brand revered for its understated luxury and sophistication. One of the most beautiful of the bunch is a Blue Velvet and Metallic Gold Leather Reissue 2.55 Double Flap Bag. With its deep jewel tones, floral motif, aged gold hardware, and beaded and sequin embellishments, the bag is the perfect accessory to kick off the autumn entertaining season.
"What's more, we have a tremendous selection of Chanel Double Flaps, Mini Flaps, vintage and jewelry," D'Amato says. "Unlike shopping in a Chanel boutique, with its recently imposed quota policy, you can buy what you want when you want it."
Collectors will also clamor for the auction's Goyard offerings. Pieces by the esteemed Paris-based brand, which celebrated its 170th anniversary this year, rarely come to auction, so Heritage is more than thrilled to present 16 Goyard bags in this sale. Highlights include a Raffia Net and Taupe Goyardine Coated Canvas Aligre Bag, a Black Goyardine Coated Canvas Purple Graffiti Mini Saigon Bag and a Gold Goyardine Coated Canvas Alto Hatbox Trunk Bag.
But the stylish offerings don't stop there. The auction also features an abundance of Louis Vuitton, including a Monogram Optic Fiber and Black Jacquard Fabric Light UP Keepall Bandoulière, a Takashi Murakami Limited Edition Monogram Panda Jewelry Box and five bags from the maison's Artycapucines Collection, in which contemporary artists such as Sam Falls, Liu Wei, Zhao Zhao, Nicholas Hlobo and Tschabalala Self put their unique spin on the classic Capucines bag.
The tour de force, however, is the ultimate Louis Vuitton travel piece: an exceedingly rare Gray Monogram Jacquard Since 1854 Malle Haute 110 Trunk. The "Since 1854" moniker pays homage to the year Louis Vuitton started his company and revolutionized the design of the classic steamship trunk by giving it a flat top.
