GRAND RAPIDS, MI.- Spanning six centuries of printmaking, 'Everything Beautiful in its Time: Six Centuries of Prints from the Jansma Collection', now on view at the
Grand Rapids Art Museum, features the complete Jansma Print Collection, including works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Édouard Manet, and Max Pechstein, among others.
The exhibition celebrates the generosity of the Jansma family, whose goal was to bring together works of Christian devotion by renowned printmakers who exhibited an outstanding level of ingenuity and skill.
The Jansma Print Collection is comprised of nearly 100 etchings, engravings, and woodcuts spanning the 15th to the 20th centuries. This exhibition highlights two important additions by Martin Schongauer, arguably the most important European printmaker of the 15th century and a great inspiration to the young Albrecht Dürer.
Biblical stories and figures have offered artists a vast amount of visual material throughout history.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV
Everything Beautiful in its Time explores several Biblical narratives as interpreted by different artists over multiple centuries. From the suffering of Job to the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, as well as numerous depictions of Christs Passion, the same scenes repeatedly appear in radically different ways as trends and techniques change over time.
This exhibition was organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum with Guest Curator, Henry Luttikhuizen, Scholar-in-Residence for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University.
