The Board of Trustees, management team and staff of the Museo Picasso Málaga wish to express their condolences to the RUIZ-PICASSO family on the death of Claude, Pablo Picasso’s son, in recognition of the crucial work Claude did in managing his father’s legacy, especially during the years 1989 to 2023 as administrator of the Succession Picasso.

Claude Ruiz-Picasso, the son of Pablo Picasso, has died at the age of 76 in Switzerland. A photographer, director of photography and film director, he administered the Succession Picasso, the body that manages the intellectual property and reproduction rights of his father’s works, from 1989 to July this year, when he passed the responsibility on to his sister Paloma.

Claude was the third of Picasso’s four children. Born on 15 May 1947, he was the son of the artist and Françoise Gilot, who died in June this year at the age of 101.

Over a period of two decades and on numerous occasions, he generously and quietly loaned major works from his personal collection to our museum. The work Claude in Brown and White (1960) is currently on display in the museum’s permanent collection.

The artist’s son has died in the year in which the fiftieth anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death is being commemorated, with numerous exhibitions being held in museums and institutions around Europe and North America as part of the ‘Picasso Celebration 1973-2023’, among them the exhibitions Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body, now on at the Museo Picasso Málaga, and The Echo of Picasso, which will open in the museum in October.
