NEW YORK, NY.- The first photography book by the internationally acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker, photographer, and music video director Andrew Dosunmu, Monograph (Damiani Books, 2023) offers a personal selection of visionary work he has created over the past 20 years. Featuring sumptuously colorful images, the book presents the visual world of Dosunmu as an artist.

Edited by Beatrice Dupire, who worked closely with Dosunmu to curate the cinematic flow of images in the book, Monograph captures the artist’s aesthetic vision filled with color, pattern, and movement. Images individually and collectively present a celebration of global culture, with sensuality, dignity, playfulness, and vitality. The book features a conversation between Dosunmu and his longtime friend, artist Arthur Jafa.

Monograph includes stills from Dosunmu’s music videos and the 2022 Netflix film Beauty, as well as portraits of stylish individuals on the streets of Dakar, Mumbai, Cartagena, and elsewhere. Woven together in non-chronological order, images play off one another and are laid out in various orientations.

“You must actively engage with the book, twist it and turn it around,” said Dosunmu. “I want to immerse the reader in my visual language and show the world through my eyes. It’s personal. It’s a scrapbook, a mood board – it’s what’s in my head.”

Throughout his career, Nigerian photographer and filmmaker Andrew Dosunmu has developed a prolific personal body of work that until now has never been published. He came to prominence in the U.S. with music videos for numerous acclaimed artists, and he is the director of Hot Irons, Restless City, Mother of George, Where Is Kyra?, and Beauty, all of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Dosunmu has published his photography in music and fashion magazines such as The Face, Vibe, Fader, Vogue Hommes, Paper, and Interview, and has been commissioned by international brands such as Nike and Adidas. Dosunmu lives between New York City and Lagos, Nigeria.
