HONG KONG.- The painting "Rouge, La pluie de petals sur le village; Blanc, Le nuage au-dessus de la maison No. 53" made in 1960 by Chinese artist Chu The-chun was auctioned $3.2 million dollars at Christies in Hong Kong Sunday, showing a great interest for Asian art. The painting was sold for more than six time the expected price of 512,000 dollars. This is a record for the Chinese painter
AFP reported that other paintings sold well, "Flowers in a Bright Yellow Vase" by Chinese artist Sanyu (1901-1966) was sold for 2.7 million dollars and "Garden" by fellow Chinese painter Liao Chi-chun (1902-1976) went for 2.18 million dollars."
"In the last two years, American and European bidders have begun competing fiercely with local collectors for contemporary Chinese art, especially those by artists who experienced political upheavals such as the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s," said Yeh on May 25 to Bloomberg.
