LONDON.- PM/AM continues its summer exhibition programme with two July shows, each a solo presentation taking at the gallerys central London exhibition space at 37 Eastcastle Street. Both Nicolas Coleman and Xiao Wang will show work created on their respective residencies.
Nicolas places a likeness of himself in luxuriously painted settings - richly decorated interiors and atmospheric external spaces. His work is joyful, bright and energetic, and appears to be rooted in a calm idealism. He celebrates beauty and detail in every object and texture on the canvas; to abandon what we could call a hierarchy in the level of attention each receives.
In contrast with the upbeat nature of his immediate aesthetic, however, Nicolas examines the roles of our complex psychologies and our responses to our surroundings, and how conflicts can arise between them. These concepts are revealed only when the themes and atmosphere of the work are probed beyond the surface, opening a more rounded discussion on the nuances of beauty in our lives, how atmosphere can so easily be tainted by complications that rest in the background of our minds.
Xiao Wang creates constructed scenes that are often inspired by and sourced from real life settings, combining dramatic, moody colour palettes with a realist approach. Wangs work captures feelings of uncertainty and anxiety using uneasy figures, distorted colours, and uncanny landscape elements. They draw attention to the mental burdens brought on by many of the issues of the contemporary. Many of his pieces are voiced from his perspective as a Chinese immigrant who is navigating through the experience of being trapped between two worlds.
The visual style of Wangs work recalls Romanticism, the Symbolist Movement, Expressionism, and Magical Realism. Through examining visual arts that reflect rapid social and cultural historical change, he explores the personal and the collective psyche in the current moment of chaos.
Nicolas Lambelet Coleman (b. 1998) is a Swiss American painter. His work broadly encompasses portraiture, still-life, and interior scenes. He is originally from North Carolina and currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
His work has been shown by 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Marrakech, Steve Turner Gallery, Los Angeles, Galerie Hussenot, Paris, and The Alexandria Museum of Art, Louisiana, among others.
Xiao Wang (b. 1990), is a Chinese born, New York based figurative painter primarily working with oil paint. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art where he received his BFA degree in Painting and Printmaking. He continued his study at San Francisco Art Institute and earned his MFA degree in Painting.
Wang has shown internationally in Europe and The United States.
