PARIS.- AKAA has announced the participation of 38 international galleries with the return of exhibitors, such as the Anne de Villepoix gallery (France), This is Not a White Cube (Angola/Portugal), Backslash (France), Kalashnikovv Gallery (South Africa), or Nomad Gallery (Belgium). We are very happy to announce the first participation of many galleries: Primo Marella (Italy), Afronova (South Africa), Band of Vices (USA), Yosr Ben Ammar (Tunisia), MCC Gallery (Morocco), Oda Art Gallery (Nigeria), to name just a few.
This new Parisian edition will showcase an unprecedented selection of African-American artists, from Brazil to the United States, without forgetting the Caribbean, and in particular through our artist invitations for the traditional Monumental Installation at the heart of the fair, the Carte Blanche and the presentation of several artists in the AKAA art book.
To complement ever richer and more innovative exhibition projects, AKAA has created "Les Rencontres", a full-fledged cultural platform within the fair where artists, curators, thinkers, art professionals and visitors are invited to express and debate on issues relating to current artistic events and the art market in Africa
and beyond its borders.
This year, Armelle Dakouo, Artistic Director, wishes to explore notions around curatorial practice. A series of panel discussions will question and debate the role and stakes curators and curatorial platforms and spaces play and defend, enabling critical thought around the artists intention, while giving them access to different types of exhibition space (private, galleries, institutions, foundations, etc.) and therefore of expression. Curatorial practice participates in raising the profile of an artist, a scene and/or an artistic community.
As AKAA prepares to announce international expansion, we look forward to seeing you for this eighth edition at the Carreau du Temple which will once again celebrate the contemporary scenes from Africa and its diasporas from October 19 - 22, 2023.
