EDINBURGH.- This June the
Royal Scottish Academy is presenting three new exhibitions: Elemental: RSA Residencies for Scotland, Reveal: Three Artists respond to Dürer's Apocalypse and Goyas Los Caprichos and Menagerie: Beasts Real and Imagined.
Founded in 1826, the Royal Scottish Academy supports art and architecture in Scotland. We are an independent, non-governmental institution, governed by our Members to operate on a charitable basis. We run our year-round programme of exhibitions, artist opportunities and events from our base at the Mound, Edinburgh, and care for our nationally recognised collection. We support artists and architects through awards, residencies, scholarships and bursaries. In 2026 the RSA will celebrate its 200th anniversary.
'Elemental: RSA Residencies for Scotland' is a selection of new work by artists Victoria Crowe RSA, Calum Wallis, Jamie Wardrop, and Siobhan McLaughlin supported by the Residencies for Scotland programme. RSA Residencies for Scotland is an artist-led scheme which enables visual artists a period of research, development and production at partner venues across Scotland. Since its inception in 2009, RSA Residencies for Scotland has awarded over £313,000 to 106 artists at 29 venues. The exhibiting artists all share a strong connection with the landscape and reference its ever-changing elements in their work. Exhibitors include Victoria Crowe RSA, who spent time at the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney, exploring the islands elemental landscape. Calum Wallis was resident at The Bothy Projects Sweeneys Bothy on the Isle of Eigg, and made drawings both with, and of, the land. Jamie Wardrop let the ecology of the Isle of Coll influence and inform creation of new work during his time at An Cridhe, and Siobhan McLaughlin spent a month at Cromerty Arts Trust on the Black Isle, experimenting with how painting can interact with the landscape.
'Reveal' is an exhibition of works created in response to two of the most important illustrated books ever printed: Albrecht Dürers The Apocalypse (1498) and Francisco de Goyas Los Caprichos (1799). Exhibiting artists, Rowan Dahl, Alan Grieve and Derrick Guild RSA will each reveal a personal response to these timeless masterpieces, and a rare complete copy of each book will be on display on loan from Blackie House Library & Museum. A newsprint facsimile of each book will be available for reference and to purchase.
'Menagerie: Beasts Real and Imagined' in the Academicians' Gallery is an exhibition bringing together works by Royal Scottish Academicians including Keith McIntyre, Adrian Wiszniewski, George Donald, Joyce W. Cairns, Derrick Guild, Wendy McMurdo and many more.
