AMSTERDAM.- Unseen Photo Fair, the art fair dedicated to the vanguard of contemporary photography, goes into its second decade with the eleventh edition. Since its first edition, the fair has been internationally heralded for its high curatorial standards and institutional quality. The upcoming edition shows that nature and environment are a source of inspiration and worry for artists from all over the world. The theme is approached from a broad spectrum of subjects and forms.
Roderick van der Lee, Director of Unseen: "It's great to see that there is such a clear and urgent subject that has occupied the global range of artists present at Unseen. A perspective on nature is given in a wealth of subjects and forms, which once again shows the versatility of the photographic medium, from cyanotypes to images generated by Artificial Intelligence on the basis of the artists brainwaves."
Unseen Photo Fair 2023
Around 70 international galleries will exhibit at the fair again, amongst whom several debutants, such as Carmen Arajao Arte from Venezuela, showing the work of young artist Suwon Lee, a young photographer whose work is already part of the collection of the prestigious MoMA in NY. Grimm Gallery, with gallery spaces in Amsterdam, New York and London, will present a solo presentation of renowned Belgian artist Dirk Braeckman. Not only in these, but in a majority of presentations, "nature' is explicitly present. Galerie Bart will debut floral still-lifes at the intersection of photography and painting. Hopstreet Gallery from Brussels will present landscape photography with stitching by Julie Cockburn, and Podbielski Contemporary from Milan showcases an environmental project by Florence di Benedetto, which is a hybrid between the documentary and artistic.
Book Market
Also around 70 independent publishers of art and photography will offer a range of new photo book publications, artist talk and signing session at the fair within its celebrated lively atmosphere.
Unbound
This year will also see the third edition of Unbound, the fair's most prestigious and forward looking project. The independent foundation is dedicated to exploring the outer edges of the photographic universe, and a favorite amongst critics and curators. For Unbound, guest curators are invited to make a selection of projects where photography crosses over into installation art, sculpture, digital art, performance art and video art.
Digital: AI and NFTs
Recent developments within the digital realms of Artificial Intelligence and NFTs and photography, will also be present at the fair. Spazio Nuovo gallery from Rome will for instance present a solo exhibition by Giuseppe Lo Schiavo; photorealistic images generated by Artificial Intelligence on the basis of the artist's brainwaves.
This year also sees the continuation of the fair's partnership with Unveil, a global platform for photography NFTs. All exhibiting galleries and their artist are given the possibility to create NFTs, alongside other projects. Thomas Albdorf and Dafna Talmor will debut NFTs with moving imagery, which will be a first opportunity to collect their work in dynamic form.
