TORINO.- Pinacoteca Agnelli opened a new site-specific outdoor installation by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Curated by Sarah Cosulich and Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti, the new installation entitled PISTARAMA is situated on the Pista 500, the iconic FIAT car test track on the roof of the Lingotto.
The new work joins the artistic programme on the Pista 500, which includes installations by Nina Beier, VALIE EXPORT, Sylvie Fleury, Liam Gillick, Marco Giordano, Nan Goldin, Shilpa Gupta, Louise Lawler, Mark Leckey, Cally Spooner and SUPERFLEX. In dialogue with the new garden on the track and with the unique architecture of the building, the installations consist of environmental interventions, light or sound works and expanded cinema projects.
For Pinacoteca Agnelli, French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (b. Strasbourg, 1965) is presenting an installation created specifically for the north parabolic curve of the Pista 500. PISTARAMA is the first panorama Gonzalez-Foerster has created outdoors and the first of monumental dimensions, with a total length of over 150m.
PISTARAMA consists of a large-scale collage, which takes its cue from the political and cultural history of Turin and extends to illustrate episodes and figures linked to social struggles and to the demands for civil rights across a multiplicity of different times and places. Through the presence of historical and fictional characters, works of art, documents, photographs, film references and the artist's visions, the project reflects on the way in which collective bodies claim the space of the city, starting from two fundamental processes: the practice of writing in public space and the collective movement of bodies marching in demonstration.
The work narrates and celebrates the way in which the union of people and their collective action can become agents of social change, and at the same time aspires to be a tool to confront a history that must not be forgotten.
PISTARAMA represents the most recent chapter of the artist's Panorama series previously realised at the Secession in Vienna (2021), the Serpentine Galleries in London (2022) and the Esther Schipper Gallery in Berlin (2022).
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is an internationally renowned artist, recognised for her ability to create works that explore the relationship between the surrounding environment, historical memory and the political aspects of artistic practice. Her work has been presented in major institutions worldwide, including Alienarium 5, Serpentine Galleries, London (2022); OPERA (QM.15), Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection, Paris (2022); VOLCANIC EXCURSION (A VISION), Secession, Vienna (2021); Martian Dreams Ensemble, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig (2018); Costumes and Wishes for 21st Century, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2016); Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. 1887-2058, K20, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2016) and the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2015); Temporama, Museo d'Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro (2015); SPLENDIDE-HOTEL, Palacio de Cristal, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2014); M.2062 (Scarlett), Kyoto Museum, Japan (2013). She has also participated in the Venice Biennales of 1990, 1993, 1999, 2003, 2009 and 2019.
Since the 1990s, through her panoramas, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster has been creating speculative worlds within museums, galleries and public spaces. These spaces are transformed into landscapes outside of time and space, inhabited by figures, symbols and stories that come from the past and mingle with scenarios from the present. Inspired by fantastic narratives, Gonzalez-Foerster brings together references to literature, film, architecture, music, science and pop culture, as well as fragments related to her travels, insights and personal life. The result consists in a number of environments that invade the museum space, playing with the imagination of the beholder and creating new connections and narratives.
THE PISTA 500: THE OUTDOOR REVOLUTION OF THE PINACOTECA AGNELLI
The Pista 500 is an artistic project that was begun in 2022 as a public sculpture initiative of the new Pinacoteca Agnelli. In dialogue with the new garden on the Pista and the architecture of the building, installations by international artists confront different languages of sculpture: from environmental interventions to light or sound works and expanded cinema projects, in a path designed to broaden the experience of a symbolic place in the city to make it also a cultural destination.
The Pista 500 is a green lung 28 metres above ground with more than 40,000 plants of over 300 different native species. The FIAT reconversion project, realised by the Camerana&Partners studio with the consultancy of Cristiana Ruspa, offers an evocative journey on the green roof overlooking the city, combined with an exclusive test drive of the iconic FIAT New 500 electric car. A hanging park to be experienced and enjoyed from an eco-sustainable and inclusive perspective, which will be further enhanced thanks to the Pinacoteca public art project.
The Pista 500 offers visitors access to the FIATCafé500, the new public space located inside Casa 500 on the fourth floor of the Pinacoteca. The new FIATCafé500 welcomes the public of Pinacoteca Agnelli and all those seeking a convivial experience with a spectacular view of the city and the mountains. art, architecture, industrial archaeology and nature merge with the history of the FIAT icon.
