NEW YORK, NY.- Gagosian announced the extension of Avedon 100, the landmark exhibition marking the centenary of Richard Avedon’s birth. Gathering 150 photographs selected by prominent artists, designers, musicians, writers, curators, and fashion world representatives, the exhibition has already drawn more than 13,000 visitors to the gallery in just over two weeks and will remain open to the public until July 7, 2023.

Kara Vander Weg, senior director at Gagosian, commented, “From the first conversations we had with the Richard Avedon Foundation about the centenary nearly two years ago, the enthusiasm for the project has been nothing short of extraordinary. What began as an idea to bring together 100 notable voices in celebration of Avedon quickly swelled to more than 150 individuals eager to share their personal experiences and views on his legacy. Tohave already had more than 13,000 visitors through the exhibition—including many of the artist’s former subjects and collaborators—is a testament not only to his enduring influence on photography, but to his profound impression on global visual culture. We are pleased to extend the exhibition to provide access to as many visitors as possible.”

An illustrated catalogue featuring a foreword by Larry Gagosian and essays by Derek Blasberg, poet and professor Jake Skeets (whose uncle, Benson James, is pictured in the exhibition), and Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, associate professor of history of art and architecture and African and African American studies at Harvard University, and the founder of the Vision & Justice Project, has been published to accompany the exhibition. At more than 300 pages, the volume features over 275 illustrations, including behind-the-scenes documentary images of Avedon working and statements by each of the participating cultural figures on the significance of their selection. The Avedon 100 catalogue and two exhibition posters are available for purchase on the Gagosian Shop website.
