NEW YORK, NY.- This week at
Bonhams New York the Impressionist & Modern Art and Post-War & Contemporary Art departments presented their marquee sales for the Spring season, achieving $10 million from both live auctions on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18.
A highlight of the week was Three Candied Apples, 1961 by Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021). One of the earliest examples of the recurring motif known to Thiebaud, this example achieved $1.26 million.
The Post-War & Contemporary Art sale on May 18 achieved $7.76 million overall with a sell-through rate of 83% by lot and 97% by value. Highlights include:
·A Declaration of War, 2018 by Jadé Fadojutimi (b. 1993) sold for $933,000.
·Blick auf den menschen, 2001 by Miriam Cahn (b. 1949) sold for two times above its estimate at $126,000.
·Bedroom Brunette with Irises (Black Variation #1), 1988 by Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) sold for $277,000.
·Untiled, 2004 by Rudolf Stingel (b. 1956) sold for $419,000.
·A record price for Ray Parkers (1922-1990) Untitled, circa 1959 sold for $167,000 against an estimate of $50,000 70,000.
·Four works by Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) from the Collection of Trisha Brown sold for a total of $405,000.
The Impressionist & Modern Art sale on May 17 achieved $2.19 million overall with a sell-through rate of 76% by lot and 95% by value. Highlights include:
·Roses, a sumptuous floral still life by the Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), realized $781,000.
·Three endearing paintings by Françoise Gilot (b. 1921) from the collection of Hollywood power couple Delmer and Mary Lou Daves achieved incredible results - Tulips and Ballerina's Slippers sold for almost two times its estimate at $139,000, Paula dans le Studio avec Philodendron sold for $61,000, and Children in the Garden of Vallauris sold for $43,000.
·A monumental and rare study for the iconic tapestry version of Judith et Holopherne, circa 1948-1949, by Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) sold for $120,000.
