5 Small Improvements You Can Make to Your Office

Many people spend at least eight hours in their office, which is a significant portion of their daily life. To be your happiest, most productive self, your office should be a place you want to go to and are excited to spend time in. This can be difficult if you're stuck with a typical grey cubicle or corporate office space. If you want to spend more time enjoying your work environment, here are five small improvements you can make to your office.

1. Add a Standing Desk

Too many people feel chained to their desks, leaving them with poor posture and not enough physical activity. You may have seen in current business trends that desk treadmills are becoming increasingly popular. Not only are you getting more exercise in, but you're also increasing blood flow to the brain, which allows you to better solve problems while keeping your energy levels high. These desks can be stored easily even in small spaces, but if this feels like a big improvement rather than a small one, you've got options. There are smaller desk ellipticals and other equipment you can keep under your desk and operate with your feet for a more subtle way to get your heart rate up.

2. Regulate the Temperature

If you're sensitive to changes in temperature, it may be difficult for you to function well in a cold or hot office. To keep the temperature where you want it, consider adding a desk fan or heater. This can help you stay more comfortable without disturbing your coworkers. Does your coffee always go cold before you have the chance to drink it? Get a mug warmer to keep your beverages at the perfect temperature. Is the air too dry? Get a desk humidifier. You can also get a small desktop refrigerator to keep drinks and skincare chilled.

3. Display Desk Toys

Sometimes you just need to fidget to let loose pent-up energy or anxiety. Sometimes you just need to give your brain a new task to work on while your subconscious works out a different problem. You can have all sorts of desk toys like puzzles and stress balls on hand for exactly this purpose. If you want to craft a specific aesthetic, try adding a zen garden. You can choose the color of sand and any fun inserts to match your style.

4. Double Your Screens

If you are a visual person who needs to see all of your information spread out to accurately process, try adding a second monitor to your computer screen. If an additional screen isn't in your budget, chances are you can also use a tablet so long as your devices are compatible. There's also the option of getting a cork board or dry erase board where you can jot down notes and random thoughts you want to come back to later.

5. Prioritize Comfort

Many officeworkers experience detrimental health conditions over time, but that doesn't mean you're doomed to a life of chronic pain. Stand up, stretch, and walk regularly. This helps keep the blood flowing and can prevent poor posture. Prioritize your comfort by investing in a good office chair with the right support. If you type all day every day, make sure you have good wrist support and an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. You should also consider accessibility tools like dictation software. Not only will this give your hands a break, but it's often a faster way to write once you've gotten the hang of it. If you have concerns about pain from repetitive motions, don't hesitate to speak to your doctor. Otherwise, you may end up with permanent damage or need surgery that will require time off from work.

Working in an office can feel drab from time to time, but you don't have to suffer through a bland environment. By adding some personal touches and items that cater to your needs, you can be excited about coming to work while taking care of your health.
