GLEN COVE, NY.- Multi-Estates Auction turned out to be their most successful auction of the year thus far, with the strongest sellers being in jewelry, decorative art, fine art and silver.
The two top sellers of the day were a set of 12 Chinese Paintings in One Book, in colored inks on paper, mounted in foldout book, selling very high at $50,000 and a GIA Certified Diamond & Platinum Ring, marquise diamond in platinum setting; diamond 3.34 carats, which went for $34,375.
Coincidentally, both top sellers were sold to a private buyer in the room.
Roland sold just over 80% of their lots with a total of $394,000.
Roland featured hundreds of lots of high-end jewelry, which took the spotlight throughout of the auction. Leading in the jewelry arena were the exquisite GIA Certified Diamond & Platinum Ring, marquise diamond in platinum setting; diamond 3.34 carats, F color, SI2. Report #5175040. Platinum setting size 7 1/2, with two (2) 50-point diamond baguettes. This piece was estimated at $20,000-$30,000 and sold slightly higher at $34,375, a Ladies Diamond Necklace w/ Certificate, designed as a line of circular cut diamonds centering upon a marquise cut diamond, F color. Center diamond approx. 1.4 carats, total diamond weight 3.87 [16" Long]. Provenance: Christie's, New York "Fine Jewels" sale, March 7, 1989. Comes with G.A.L. Certificate, which sold for $11,875, a pair of Antique Russian Diamond Earrings, each earring with 20 diamonds set in 14K yellow and white gold, in the original box, circa 1900. [2" L x 3/4" W], selling for $6,875 and a David Webb 18K Gold & Mabe Pearl Ring, featuring a 20mm pearl in a large octagonal shaped setting, stamped "Webb / 18K". Size 6. 39.4 grams, 25.3 dwt., which sold for $3750.
The actual top seller of the day was the set of 12 Chinese Paintings in One Book, in colored inks on paper, mounted in foldout book, each bearing similar chop mark, variously depicting landscapes with buildings and figures. Comes with receipt from E&J Frankel, NY. This piece was estimated at just $800-$1,200, but shot up quickly and sold for $50,000, while a Chinese Porcelain Vase, Famille rose design vase with unusual calligraphy and figures from Chinese history. [22 1/2" H x 10" Diam.], sold reasonably for $2812.
Antique furniture also showed very well at the April 1st auction, with an18th C. American Chippendale Mahogany & Marble Table, the inset top over shell accented cabriole legs, on claw and ball feet. [24 1/2" H x 28" W x 18" D], estimated at a low $800-$1,200, went for $18,750, a George III Period Mahogany Pembroke Table, George III period, circa 1780, mahogany Pembroke table with carved drop leaf flaps around two drawers, raised on carved square legs. Later brass handles. [29" H x 33" W x 22 1/4" D (closed)], selling for $8750 and an unusual Italian Baroque-Style Giltwood & Pietra Dura Table, on a 19th century base, the top inlaid with stone or marble birds and flower motifs. [30 1/2" H x 52" Diam.], selling for $2250.
Silver was represented well in the sale, highlights being a 19th Century Russian Silver Samovar, of generous proportions, with fine checker pattern and neoclassical frieze bone handles, having four insulated bone mounts urn form with detachable covers, on square base with claw feet and acanthus scroll handles; all marked, 1896. [19" H x 14" W x 12" D]. which sold for $8,125 and a 6-Piece Sterling Silver Tea & Coffee Set, comprising a kettle on stand with burner [14" H], coffee pot [10" H], teapot, creamer, covered sugar bowl, and a tray [18" x 24"], with scrolling floral designs, one marked "K". 180 ozt. Inclusive, selling for $3750.
In the fine and contemporary art arena, an Attributed to Henryk Siemiradzki (Polish, worked in Rome, 1843-1902): Nine Women Painting, Large Romantic School oil on canvas, in the Symbolist / Pre-Raphaelite taste, depicting nine women in thoughtful poses in an idyllic setting. [Art: 26" H x 40" W; Frame: 33 1/2" H x 47 1/2" W], sold for $5,937, a Pavel Tchelitchew: Portrait - Oil Painting, signed lower left; unframed. Signed and dated '1926' verso. [15 1/4" H x 11" W], sold for $6250 and an Augusta Christine Fells (Moore) Savage (American, 1892-1962), "Gamin" - Painted Clay Portrait, A rare work by an important, talented artist, a key member of the Harlem Renaissance, titled "Gamin". "Gamin" was her best-known work of the 1920s, being an informal bust portrait of her nephew, for which she was awarded a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship to study in Paris in 1929. [9 1/4 H x 5 1/2 W x 3 1/2 D inches], selling for $8750.
Decorative items always do well at Roland Auction, with thi]s month being no eception. A large Neoclassical-Style Gilt Bronze Chandelier, with ribbon motif standard above laurel leaf and berry garland swags between pendant lights, overall with rows of pendant prisms. [46 1/2" H x 27" Diam.], sold higher than its estimate, at $5,000 and an English Late Georgian Shell Inlaid Tea Caddy, Tea caddy of sarcophagus form with floral details and interior compartments, and raised on carved bun feet. [7 1/4" H x 12 1/2" W x 6 3/4" D], sold for $2375.
