NEW YORK, NY.- The Grand Reopening of
La Belle Epoque Auction House in Manhattan kicked-off with their Multi-Estates Auction on Saturday, March 18th, marking La Belle Epoques first auction since temporarily shutting down for 10 months of complete renovations in the Spring 2022, due to severe water damage in their 7,000 square-foot space at 71 8th Avenue on the border of the Meatpacking District and the West Village in New York City.
Leading the way at the first new auction was an Attributed to Joan Miro (Spanish-Catalan, 1893-1983) Drawing of a Woman, Signed and dated Miro 1917 lower right. Approximate site size 7"H x 6.5"W. This piece was estimated at $700-$1000 but sold higher to a bidder in the room for $2,048.
This theme of unusual finds at great prices carried out through the entire auction, which featured an impressive collection of fine art, antiques, silver, mid-century modern furniture, jewelry, fashion, lighting, memorabilia, collectibles, decorative items and more.
There were quite a few bidders in the room, one of whom was lucky enough to get My Daughters by Abraham S. Baylinson (Russian-American, 1882-1950), Oil on Canvas, polychrome Portrait of two sisters titled "My Daughters", with a self portrait of the artist in the upper right hand of the painting. Signed 1937, lower right side. In a molded frame Approx Site Size: 43 signed 1937, lower right side. Sold for just $640.
Other notables in the Fine Art arena were a Piranesi Style Print, Two sheet 18th century Piranesi style engravings of the Vatican partial gilt mahogany frame with a double mat Approx site size 28" x 39" Approx overall size 39" x 50" Provenance following Central Park West Estate New York City, which sold for $960 and a Salvador Dali Limited Edition Print lithograph "Les songs drolatiques de Pantagruel" Pantragruels Funny Dreams circa 1973, signed lower right, numbered 206/250 Approx site size 21"H x 30"W Approx overall size 44"H x 35"W, which went for $768.
Highly-anticipated items in Contemporary Art included the Bronze Clad Sculpture of Female Torso, Mid-century modern patinated aged "bronze clad" sculpture of a nude woman Mid-to-late 20th century Signed bottom right of base approx measurement 30"H, selling for $1408 and an After Giacometti Bronze Table, with stylized nude figure of a woman, marble base Base approx 8 1/2" x 7 1/2 Approx 27 tall, which sold for $608, while a Tiffany Style Floor Lamp with Leaded Glass Shade, wisteria design Approx. 41"H 15"H x 19"D, sold for $1,920.
There was a lot of interest in the rare Late 17th Century Italian Walnut Prie Dieu, The Prie Dieu retains both marquetry and parquetry inlay throughout. Inside panel with inlay of a crucifixion raised on blocked feet. Approx measurement 35"H x 25.5"W x 22"D., which went for just $832 and the unique Italian 19th Century Savonarola Open Armchair, Carved walnut, over upholstered leather seat and back rest Ramshead arm supports. Approx measurement 34.5"H x 25.5W x 18D that sold to a bidder in the room for $384.
Another bargain going to an in-person bidder was the Mid Century Modern Tuxedo Buttoned Reclining Charles Eames style lounge chair and ottoman For Herman Miller c. 1960s Approx Size Armchair: 43"H x 36"W x 19"D, selling for $832.
Decorative items and silver also had a showing, with a set of Sterling Silver Water Goblets, 12 American 20th century sterling silver goblets. Approx 43 ozt Approx 6.5" tall, going for $1024, a misc. Assorted Group of Asian Carved Jade Finials, early 20th century Asian origin, selling for $1408 and a rare group of Schafer & Vater Alice in Wonderland German Bisque Porcelain. Approximately 13 pieces including but not limited to teapots, mugs, miniature teacups, saucers, serving dishes Depicting Alice in Wonderland characters circa 1900, selling for just $448.
