EDINBURGH.- RSA New Contemporaries, supported by Walter Scott & Partners Ltd, represents the
Royal Scottish Academys commitment to supporting and promoting contemporary art and architecture in Scotland.
Now in its 14th year, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see some of the best emerging talent in Scotland under one roof. Showcasing 57 graduates selected from the 2021 degree shows, the exhibition will feature a diverse array of painting, sculpture, film-making, photography, printmaking, installation, performance and architecture.
Exhibition Convenor, Annie Cattrell RSA, made the selection of exhibitors with assistance from fellow Academicians and representatives from the five main colleges of art. The five Scottish schools of architecture are each represented by graduates selected by Architecture Convenor Rab Bennetts RSA.
The RSA team works closely with exhibitors in an effort to develop lasting relationships in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond. With considerable monetary prizes in addition to residency, studio and purchase awards, the development of this exhibition is an important initiative for emerging artists and architects in Scotland, enabling a 'first exhibition' opportunity for over 50 early-career artists and architects annually. Previous RSA New Contemporaries have gone on to achieve acclaim and recognition after the exhibition.
Exhibition Convenor, Annie Cattrell RSA, says: 'This years exhibition will include imaginative and thought provoking work that reflects the enormous creativity and resourcefulness of this student cohort, who experienced the full impact of the pandemic restrictions and uncertainty, most especially in their final year of study.
'It is particularly exciting to see the magnificent RSA galleries filled with the fruits of this diverse and emergent talent. Visitors can look forward to being surprised and moved by the eclectic methods and innovations used in the production of these meaningful artworks. The artworks are broad ranging in concept and making, these will include drawings, installations, film, paintings, performances, and sculptures.'
