Goldin's Winter Comics, Video Games & TCG Elite Auction smashes records for rare comic books, original art & more
Captain America Comics #1.

RUNNEMEDE, NJ.- Comic books featuring beloved superheroes, trading cards, original artwork and pop culture items set new records and attracted big bids as the gavel sounded for Goldin’s Winter Comics, Video Games & TCG Elite Auction.

The bidding was topped by the $146,400 paid for an ultra-rare Captain America Comics #1, the highest ever for a copy of the comic in its grade (CGC 3.0). The issue features the first appearance and origin of Steve Rogers — arguably one of the most beloved superheroes — as well as his young sidekick, Bucky. The copy is one of just 186 copies certified to date by CGC out of a reported print run of one million comics.

The auction was also headlined by the record $57,600 paid for the original pen and ink artwork illustrating the dust jacket of Batman: Hush 20th Anniversary Edition. The one-of-a-kind drawing is signed by Jim Lee, the world-renowned comic book artist, publisher and Chief Creative Officer of DC, as well as inker Scott Williams.

Goldin’s Winter non-sports event featured several highly sought-after comic books as well as rare trading cards, video games and pop culture items, many of which set all-time highs for sale prices. Select notable items from the auction include:

• Fantastic Four #1 comic, featuring first appearances and origins of Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, Invisible Girl, The Thing, and Mole Man: $84,000

• 2016 Pokemon Japanese XY Black Star Promo 20th anniversary card: $32,520 (an all-time record for this card)

• 1993 Magic The Gathering Alpha Rare Mox Sapphire: $14,402 (an all-time record for this card)

• Gone With The Wind World Premier Ticket Stub (1939): $13,200

• First Blood First Print Factory-Sealed VHS Tape: $12,300

• 1982 Conan The Barbarian Factory-Sealed Betamax Tape: $4,380

• Amazing Spider-Man #252 comic, featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man's iconic black costume: $4,020 (an all-time record for CGC 9.8 grade)

• Hawkman #4 comic, featuring the first appearance and origin of Zatanna: $3,660 (an all-time record for CGC 9.0 grade)

• G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1, featuring the first appearance the Hasbro toy line in a comic: $3,300 (an all-time record for CGC 9.8 grade)

“From comic books to trading cards to VHS tapes, items that drew big bids during our Winter Elite auction suggest there is a serious appetite for pop culture collectibles,” said Ashley Cotter-Cairns, Head of Comic Book Strategy. “We as a species have always gravitated towards legends and heroes, whether they are real or fictional, and that’s what we are offering here at Goldin — a chance to get closer to those heroes by bidding on and owning a piece of their legend.”

Over the years, Goldin has built a strong reputation as the leading collectibles marketplace. Ken Goldin and his team have brokered over $1.5 billion worth of sales of rare and highly sought-after collectible items across categories. Notable record-breaking comic book transactions include the sale of Action Comics No. 1 for $3.4 million debuting the appearance of Superman and the $1.7 million sale of a comic featuring the first appearance of Batman.
