PARIS.- Bonhams has appointed Caroline Schulten as Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department in Paris with immediate effect (January 2023). She will be based in Paris.

Caroline Schulten began her career in the Chinese art world at the Asian Art Museum in Berlin where she worked as Associate Curator in the Chinese department researching their extensive collection of Chinese archaic bronzes. Following three years at Lempertz as a Specialist in Asian Art, Caroline joined Sotheby’s in 2006 as a Senior Specialist working in Amsterdam and London. She relocated to New York in 2008 and subsequently to Paris in 2012, where she was appointed Head of the Chinese ceramics and works of art department.

With two decades of experience in the Chinese art world, Dr. Schulten has handled a number of prominent collections and spearheaded several very successful single-owner sales including Masterpieces of Chinese Precious Metalwork: Early Chinese Gold and Silver from the Collection of Carl Kempe (May 2008), Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art from J.T. Tai & Co. (March 2011), Trésors de la Chine Ancienne de la Collection David David-Weill (December 2015), Jades Archaïques de Chine comprenant l’Ancienne Collection Max Loehr (December 2016), and Paintings, Calligraphy and Rubbings from a German Private Collection (June 2018).

Dr. Schulten graduated from Merton College, Oxford University, with a DPhil in Chinese Archaeology, and holds a master’s degree in Chinese Studies from Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich.

Caroline is fluent in German, English and French.

Caroline Schulten said: "Bonhams recent expansion has made it one of the most accessible auction houses in the world with strong local roots. The Bonhams global Chinese art team comprises a close-knit team of specialists renowned for its professionalism, expertise and delivering strong results. I am honoured to be joining one of the most entrepreneurial auction houses and am looking forward to my first sale in Paris in June 2023 during the Printemps Asiatique.”

Asaph Hyman, Bonhams’ Global Head, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, said: “I am delighted to welcome Caroline to Bonhams. She brings a wealth of international experience and expertise and will be a hugely valuable addition to our international team. Caroline brings with her two decades of experience in the Chinese art world, handling numerous prominent collections and I look forward to working with her together.”

Further to its strong position in Europe and UK, Bonhams in Paris has been entrusted most recently with major collections, including the collections of Claude de Marteau, Robert and Jean-Pierre Rousset, all of which achieved exceptional results.
