NEW YORK, NY.- Jack Shainman Gallery announced its newest location in Tribeca. Situated at 46 Lafayette Street, Jack Shainman Gallery’s Tribeca space occupies the eastern end of the historic building once known as 346 Broadway and originally designed by Stephen Decatur Hatch and constructed by McKim Mead & White in 1898. Formerly home to the New York Life Insurance Company, Jack Shainman Gallery will encompass 20,000 square feet in one of the most storied buildings in Manhattan, including the ground floor main hall, additional viewing rooms, and above mezzanine spaces. 46 Lafayette Street will be inaugurated by long-time gallery artist Nick Cave as early as fall of 2023.
Gloria Vega Martín is leading the design of 46 Lafayette Street in close collaboration with Jack Shainman and project lead Carlos Vega. Shainman and Vega first worked with Martín on the renovations of Jack Shainman Gallery’s The School, a 30,000-square-foot former high school in Kinderhook, New York, under the direction of the late architect Antonio Jiménez Torrecillas.
Much like the ethos of The School, Jack Shainman Gallery will celebrate and explore the dialogue between art and architecture by retaining many of the original design structures and details of 46 Lafayette Street, including its marbled columns, monumental stairways, and ornate, coffered ceiling. The main exhibition space, known
as The Hall, features 29-foot ceilings and arched windows along the perimeter. Additional exhibition spaces, viewing rooms, art libraries, and private offices will be located on the upper mezzanine and throughout the second floor.

Ultimately, we could not be more honored to mark this seminal occasion with an inaugural show by Nick Cave, whose thoughtful and impactful work never ceases to amaze and bring valuable dialogues.”
Cave is an artist and educator, working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, installation, video, sound, fashion, and performance. Cave is celebrated internationally, and his career-spanning retrospective organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, titled Forothermore, will continue on to Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from November 18, 2022 to April 10, 2023. To honor Cave’s vision for his inaugural exhibition at 46 Lafayette Street, The Hall will remain a vast open space, prime for his larger-than-life works.
Jack Shainman Gallery will continue to operate its exhibition spaces at 513 West 20th Street and The School in Kinderhook, New York.
