Interview with Ricardo Santiago Soto (art/photography)

ART
-are you self-taught?

No, I took eight (8) years of private art lessons from the gallery owner at a western art gallery located in Los Olivos, California. I expanded my foundation drawing and fashion illustration at Otis Parsons located in Los Angeles, California. I usually take about eight (8) hours for one of my drawings, when I practice, which is the closest to being self-taught.

-what is your best achievement, thus far?

I have won ten (10) fine art awards from Applause, Santa Barbara County Fair, Santa Maria Arts Council, and Bank of America. I have not entered any fine art competitions, since 1993.

-what are your goals as an artist?

I am working on creating an art exhibition of fine art, which is being kept confidential until I finish my work. I am available for commissioned art starting at $150 for 8 hours of work. My artwork has been appraised at 120 GBP. I want my fine artwork to appear in art auctions and be prized possessions of art collectors. I want my artwork to increase in value over time.

PHOTOGRAPHY

-are you self-taught?

Mostly yes. I learned on the job, so to speak. I just happen to be at the right place at the right time. I was not thrown into situations as I created those situations, I had some control over them. I am mostly a photojournalist given access to better photographic situations than if not one. Once given access, I take photos and I seem to capture the right image at the right time. I use my art background to pinpoint composition and wait for the right expression to highlight, but it is usually being at the right place at the right time. It is the same process being a videographer.

-what is your best achievement, thus far?

I have won eight (8) awards in photography, due to my photography covering Miss Universe 2017. Yet, the highest achievement I have gained was being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in photography by WIND International Film Festival 2018 located in Hollywood, California.

-what are your goals as a photographer?

I am currently working on a book focused on pageantry that includes my photography. I am also working on an art exhibition of photography of my work. I am currently selling photography prints and want them to appear in art auctions and art collections by art collectors.
