Eligibility for the NDIS

You might wonder what NDIS is. It is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and it is a government scheme that provides support for people living with a disability to participate successfully in daily life that this support is necessary to reduce the impact of their impairment on their life in the future.

In this article, we'll outline the eligibility requirements for the NDIS and help you decide if you want to apply for NDIS.

Who Is Eligible for the NDIS?

The NDIS is available to Australians aged seven and over who meet the residency requirements - you must reside in Australia and be an Australian Citizen.

Below are the detailed NDIS requirements:

● If you are aged 7 to 65
● An Australian citizen or permanent resident who lives in Australia
● A permanent impairment must cause the disability
● You hold a protected special category visa.

If you have a disability that will likely be with you for life, you may be eligible for NDIS support.

What Disabilities Does the NDIS Cover?

It is available for people with a disability caused by a permanent impairment.

It means that the disability can't be temporary and must be caused by a physical or mental condition that's been with you for six months or more.

You may visit the list here to know more.

How Do I Apply for the NDIS?

If you are unsure whether you require assistance or are eligible, do not worry. You may contact your local area coordinator or NDIS office, where you can access information and support to make an application.

Applying for the NDIS isn't as difficult as you may believe. The following are the steps you must take:

1. Check your eligibility, and make sure you meet the age, residency, and citizenship requirements.

2. Getting an assessment from your local coordinator or NDIS office is necessary as it will help you determine your support requirements. You can find the locations here.

3. Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 to apply over the phone with support.

4. Complete an NDIS application form called an 'Access Request Form. You can get it here.

What Happens After I Apply for the NDIS?

Once you've applied for the NDIS, what happens next?

● The first thing that happens is your application is assessed to see if you're eligible for the scheme. If you are, then you'll be put into a queue and invited to join the NDIS.

● The NDIS will send you a letter if your application is approved. Within three weeks, they will also contact you to arrange a time to start developing your plan.

● If your application is incomplete, it'll be sent back to you with feedback on what you need to do to complete it.

● If you're not eligible, you can do the following:

1. Seek alternative assistance instead.
2. Within three months of rejection, you may request an internal review.

Conclusion
You are likely eligible for the NDIS if you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder and you have a disability that is caused by one or more permanent impairment(s).
