KAMPALA, UGANDA.- When Katwe Primary school from Kampala came through on September 27th, the kids thrived in experimenting and finding words out of Afriart Gallery - AAG’s current exhibition title Kaddugalamukatale! ‘Ttale’ – a place where animals are taken to graze, ‘Addugala’ – someone is dirty and ‘Lamuka’ – to wake up and become aware. It is amazing to get introduced to new meanings of Xenson’s exhibition through the children’s eyes.




Since August this year, AAG is organizing regular school visits to the gallery exposing as many young people as possible to art for a richer understanding of life. The gallery is a creative joint to help them grow in their critical imagination, to experience a space of inspiration, interaction, and self-awareness encouraging them to come back to these places in the future. AAG school visits reflect a community engagement program focusing on public school students who are the least likely to encounter the arts and barely familiar with gallery spaces.

So far, AAG hosted two visits from public schools in Kampala (Mirembe Primary School and Katwe Primary school), inviting each a group of 30 students to come through for a day of art engagements. The students dived into drawing sessions, took part in art activities trained their team spirit and creative skills, and learned about the exhibited artworks while not taking their eyes off the centerpiece of Kaddugalamukatale – the installation Abasika Batute (‘The heirs have been taken'). It was exciting to see the students highly engaging with the team and artists of AAG as well as the sponsors who make this program possible. Each school visit is accompanied by a closing lunch break, letting the students fill their bellies and excitingly exchange about what’s a gallery like. Whenever there is a school visit to AAG, it’s a vibrant happening full of interaction, curiosity, joy, and creativity.
