Abraham Lincoln, Vincent van Gogh, and Marilyn Monroe, among fine autographs and artifacts up for auction
Vincent van Gogh Handwritten Manuscript. Now at: $14,017 (12 bids). Estimate: $40,000.

BOSTON, MASS.- With over 850 items in a wide variety of categories—American history, art, literature, entertainment, music, and more—RR Auction's August Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction is sure to impress.

Highlights include an important Abraham Lincoln signed document from 1865, the historically important document rebuilding the North-South economy: President Lincoln grants a permit to transport cotton across "the national military lines." The two-page manuscript was signed as president, and is dated March 7, 1865. (Estimate: $40,000+)

A handwritten poem by Vincent van Gogh, the extraordinary one-page manuscript by Vincent Van Gogh, is unsigned with no date but circa late 1876. Van Gogh, an avid reader, transcribes two poems: one, "Afternoon in February" by Henry W. Longfellow, contains six stanzas of four lines each; on the reverse, he pens a fragment of unidentified religious verse in Dutch, totaling 29 lines. A remarkable and fabulous handwritten piece by the legendary painter, perhaps his closest association with America. (Estimate: $40,000+)

A fabulous Marilyn Monroe signed photo, the amazing vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of Monroe as sexy honky-tonk singer Kay Weston in the 1954 film River of No Return, gorgeously signed and inscribed. Monroe's sultry beauty is aptly captured in this fabulous portrait, which boasts a perfectly placed signature. (Estimate: $20,000+)

An autograph letter by George Washington tending to his Mount Vernon estate, the one-page letter sent as president, signed "Go: Washington," dated April 8, 1791. Handwritten letter to his nephew George Augustine Washington, penned from Dumfries, Virginia, during his presidency. The recipient, George Augustine Washington, capably managed Mount Vernon's farms during Washington's absences in Philadelphia at the Constitutional Convention and during his presidency. Here, President Washington offers some advice on happenings on his properties, focusing on a construction project and preparations for the planting season. Most remarkably, he conveys his complete trust in one of his slaves, Davy Gray, to begin planting. A remarkable handwritten letter by President Washington regarding his vast Mount Vernon estate. (Estimate: $20,000+)

A massive portrait of Elvis Presley inscribed to Col. Tom Parker, the larger-than-life vintage matte-finish close-up portrait of Elvis Presley, signed and inscribed in thick black felt tip to his famous manager, Colonel Tom Parker, "To the 'Admiral,' you know how I feel! So there's no need for a snow job. E. P." (Estimate: $15,000+)

And a rare Al Capone Christmas card. The Christmas and New Year's card is signed and inscribed inside, "Your Dear Friend, Al Capone, Regards to Frank & Joe." This extraordinary Christmas card presents the dichotomy of Al Capone—a bootlegging, bloodthirsty gangster on the one hand and a tender, thoughtful friend on the other.

Other important autographs include Neil Armstrong, Harry Houdini, Charles Lindbergh, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Charles Schulz, and Thomas Edison.

The Fine Autograph and Artifacts auction began on July 20 and will conclude on August 10.
