WICHITA, KAN.- Following the appearance of her retrospective in New York City, the
Wichita Art Museum stages a career survey exhibition for artist Beth Lipman titled All in Time, on view through September 25, 2022.
Artwork by Lipman is by turns stunning and mesmerizing while thoughtful and rigorous. The excessive extravagance of clear glass inspires immediate delight.
Lipman first exhibited at WAM in Summer 2017 with captivating art in the glass exhibition Ritual and Desire. The abundance of Lipmans Laid (Time-) Table with Cycadsa long table overflowing above and below with clear glass flora and vases, goblets, and other domestic objectswas gripping. Lipmans work continues to gain greater and stronger national attention. She was honored by a 2013 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. PBS featured her in the 2013 Craft in America documentary. In 2018, Lipman was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas and Chrysler Museum of Art in Virginia have major commissions as does WAM, where Lipmans large-scale sculpture Living History, installed in April, now suspends from the ceiling in the museums Boeing Foyer.
All in Time, a major loan show, displays exquisite work presenting the development and strength of this exceptional artist. As a Museum of Arts and Design curator noted, Lipman is an important voice of our time. She creates work that, while universal and timeless in scope, illuminates the experience of living in the United States today. The New Yorker magazine claimed Lipmans recent New York exhibition was a cinematic, seductive affair. The artists commentary on geological time, human vulnerability, social convention, and domestic tradition invites longer viewing and rewards deeper contemplation.
At mid-career, Lipman is an artist of serious accomplishment. The Museum of Arts and Design in New York City has staged a one-person survey exhibition with related catalogue. She has been honored with artist fellowships by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, naming only two. Her work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Corning Museum of Glass, Detroit Institute of Arts, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
