MARLBOROUGH, MASS.- Bonhams Skinner will host a live auction of Modern & Contemporary Art on June 29, 2022, starting at 10 a.m. in the Marlborough gallery. The sale will include paintings, sculpture and works of art on paper from the 20th and 21st centuries. Highlights include incredible works from Yayoi Kusama, Robert Rauschenburg, Tom Wesselmann and more. Coinciding with the Modern and Contemporary Auction will be a timed online auction of European Fine Art running from June 20-30, 2022, featuring around 50 paintings and drawings from the Old Masters to the 20th century.
Leading the Modern & Contemporary highlights is a collection of Tom Wesselman (American, 1931-2004) works, including his 1963 TV Dinner, estimated at $200,000-300,000. This work was exhibited in The Green Gallery in New York. Shortly thereafter, it was presented as a wedding gift to artist and designer Marcus Ratliff who was a lifelong friend of Wesselmanns.
Four additional works by Wesselmann will be offered, all of which were gifts to his dear friend Ratliff. One of the works, Monica Sitting With Legs Spread, 1985/97, estimated at $20,000-30,000, was originally created as a fundraising effort in support of Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World). Another highly estimated work is Portrait Collage #11 from 1959, estimated at $80,000-120,000. Wesselmann was one of the leading American pop artists of the 1960s and worked in painting, collage and sculpture.
Robert Rauchenburgs 1978 Van Vleck Series III will also be offered at auction, estimated at $60,000-80,000, and made from imagery, fabric, and acrylic on plywood. This work was commissioned by and named after Joseph Van Vleck, a neighbor of Rauchenburgs in Captiva, Florida. Rauchenburg created a group of eight wooden panels for Joseph and his wife Louise, as well as Josephs six children, each panel representing a different member of the family. Conceived as part of Rauschenberg's Spreads series, the artist designed the works to hang together in a continuous installation; however, each panel serves as an individual portrait and Van Vleck gifted each child his or hers.
The European Fine Art sale highlights include works from French and British artists, 19th century Spanish and Italian artists, as well as a few important Old Masters. Leading the sale are the following lots:
● Jan Wildens (Dutch, 1586-1653), Studio of Peter Paul Rubens, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Oil on canvas. Estimated at $30,000-50,000. This is an Old Master that is being sold to benefit the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College.
● Eugène Boudin (French, 1824-1898), Les Bords de la Touques à Trouville Pendant les Grandes Marées, 1893, estimated at $35,000-55,000. Boudin was a French plein air painter, famous for his marine scenes.
