NEW YORK, NY.- What do influential artists Winslow Homer, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alice Neel, Milton Avery, Hans Hofmann, Joan Mitchell and Amoako Boafo have in common? They all will be on view at the jointly curated inaugural exhibition of Liz Sterling and Jonathan Boos' shared gallery space on the third floor of 980 Madison Avenue. The Beginning of Sterling | Boos: Over 100 Years of Painting and Sculpture opened April 20, 2022, presenting exceptional secondary market paintings, sculpture and works on paper across all aspects of their combined expertise, spanning Modernism, Social Realism, Abstraction, Post-War and Contemporary Art.

The Beginning of Sterling | Boos brings together and juxtaposes diverse works from the past century, presenting them in new light. Highlights of the exhibition include two works by Winslow Homer, The Backrush, an oil work from the 1890s, and the watercolor Rowing at Prouts Neck, 1887, as well as Milton Avery’s Sea and Birds, 1952, a beautiful example of painting from the artist’s later years, and a mobile by Alexander Calder, The Cat Tail, 1967. From the 1970s, the gallery is showing Joan Mitchell’s Loom II, 1976, and Alice Neel’s Lilly Brody, 1977, a painting which once exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Also on display are contemporary works Honest Gaze, 2020, an acrylic portrait by Accra-born artist Kwesi Botchway, and Jammie Holmes’ large-scale mixed media painting Busy City Streets, 2017.

Sterling and Boos will also show works by Robert Indiana, Childe Hassam, Robert Vickrey, Henry Koerner, and many others.

“I am excited to present this show alongside Jonathan, which marks a new chapter in our respective businesses and speaks to the breadth of what our practices have to offer,” said Liz Sterling.

“Liz and I are thrilled to collaborate on this exhibition, the first in our shared gallery space, featuring so many works of quality and historical and artistic significance.” said Jonathan Boos.

The Beginning of Sterling | Boos consists of works on loan and available for sale. Sterling and Boos will present three to four exhibitions per year at 980 Madison Avenue, varying in subject matter from European and American art from the 19th and 20th centuries to Contemporary Art.

Liz Sterling built her career at Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where she most recently served as the director of private sales and chairman of American art. Sterling’s specializations range from 19th- and 20th-century American and European art to Modern, Post-War and Contemporary. She has advised some of today’s most respected collectors on building museum-quality collections.

Jonathan is a private dealer specializing in American paintings, drawings and sculpture of the 20th century with a particular focus on museum-quality works from the Ashcan School, Modernism, Realism and the Post-war period. For almost three decades Boos has been the advisor to the Manoogian Collection, and currently advises several prominent younger collectors. Jonathan Boos is a member of the Art Dealers Association of America.
