NEW YORK, NY.- Christies will present a selection of Prints and Multiples throughout its spring season in New York. Available to view at Rockefeller Center from 16 22 April, the works from the first Prints and Multiples sale of the season will be offered on 22 April. Alongside the sale viewing will be prints highlights from the upcoming Post-War and Contemporary Art Day sale in May.
The wide selection of works span from the 19th Century to present day, featuring works from Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol, Donald Judd and Roy Lichtenstein. Highlights from the April live sale include two works from distinguished series in master printmaker Andy Warhols career Superman, from his Myths series ($200,000-300,000) and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, from Reigning Queens ($150,000-200,000). Also on offer are a pair of Roy Lichtenstein screenprints in colors: Reverie, from 11 Pop Artists, Volume II ($120,000-180,000), and the Bull Profile Series ($100,000-150,000).
From an important private collection comes Jasper Johns Corpse and Mirror ($100,000-150,000). Named in reference to the drawing game favored by the Surrealists called exquisite corpse, the work is one of three prints based on Johns 1974 painting of the same name. The techniques used by the artist in this series result in a carnivalesque hall-of-mirrors effect that boggles the mind but delights the eye.
Among this seasons highlights is Andy Warhols Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) ($1,500,000-2,500,000), a set of ten screenprints in colors. The work will be offered in the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day sale in May, and will be on view alongside works from the forthcoming Prints and Multiples sale from 16 22 April.
