Tablet vs Laptop for drawing

Recently, more and more people are striving to get the profession of a designer or other "artistic" specialist.

Tech requirements
First of all, you need to take into account a few basic principles. Working with graphic programs makes rather high demands on RAM, hard drive, processor and display characteristics. The best laptop for drawing must necessarily be equipped with a processor of one of the latest models with a high clock speed and a sufficiently capacious second-level cache. Otherwise, you are unlikely to be able to work comfortably and productively, since the computer will need a lot of time to process this or that operation, and this may prevent you from completing the project on time. In addition, a laptop for three-dimensional graphics simply must have a powerful discrete graphics card with a large amount of video memory.

The requirements for hard drive capacity are due to the fact that multimedia files require significant disk space. A model with a fast hard drive (7200 rpm) is able to compensate for the lack of a second hard drive.

The best laptop for graphic design and drawing is a laptop with a large screen, preferably 19 inches and above. If you plan to work with an external monitor, pay attention to the presence of the appropriate ports in the laptop. If PC mobility is important, then you need to look for a compromise solution between it and the quality of the configuration.

Graphic design laptops will allow you to complete complex projects in the shortest possible time and at a high level. A graphics station is a specialized high-performance computer capable of running professional graphics, 3D applications, and other types of specialized software. Of course, professional graphics stations have a price much higher than conventional computers, but their capabilities are completely different.

Tablet
You will need a graphics tablet to enter hand-drawn drawings into your computer. One of the main characteristics of this device is the size of the working surface. Professionals often choose large models, for example, A4 or A3 format. For an amateur, the A5 format is enough, especially since an increase in the working surface invariably affects the price of the device.

Artists are well aware that the variety of shades and the smoothness of gradients in the drawing depend on the softness of the pencil. In a graphics tablet, this is the pressure sensitivity of the pen. It is believed that for amateur models a normal indicator is 512 levels of sensitivity, but in most devices 1024 levels have already been implemented. The higher this number, the wider the possibilities for drawing options. Surface resolution is measured in lines per inch (l/d). This parameter indicates how much pen movement the surface recognizes when the tip is moved one inch. For many tasks, 2540 l / d is enough. Strict format requirements are typical for professional tasks, for example, when you need to create large sketches with high detail, while an amateur can ignore them without sacrificing convenience.

Of the additional features, pay attention to the way the pen is connected to the device. It can be wired and wireless, and in the second case, the pen can either run on batteries or not need additional power.

Some tablets provide an additional mouse connection, while others themselves are used as a touchpad when connected to a computer. In addition, the modern trend has become the appearance in graphics tablets of support for "multi-touch", which allows you to scale the image with your fingers.

Typical costs
Amateur graphics tablets cost no more than $100. At the same time, the dimensions of the working surface, as a rule, do not exceed the A5 format. Amateur models have everything to help their owner take the first steps in drawing. In fact, the choice of device comes down to the selection of the optimal parameters of the working surface, as well as the appropriate design and ergonomics.

In general, depending on the tasks you are facing, you yourself can decide what is better to choose - just a good laptop to which you can connect a graphics tablet, or a powerful graphics station. For amateurs and beginners, the first option is probably suitable. For professionals with experience - the second.
